Bargain Bin: Miracle Merchant

Miracle Merchant is a brilliant and beautiful Solitaire game by Arnold Rauers, improving upon the ideas set down with Card Thief and Card Crawl to create the perfect fantasy single-player card game.

In Miracle Merchant, you play the titular potion seller, combining five colors of ingredient cards to create the perfect potion for your customer.

You have four piles of cards, but five colors- black ‘void’ cards are sprinkled throughout your decks, and will take points from the potion you’re making unless the customer wants a void ingredient or one of your other cards synergizes with it.

You have four slots to place ingredient cards, and which card you place in which slot matters. A colored circle on the bottom of a card means you get an extra point for each of the color card you use in the potion- a symbol on either side of the card indicates extra points for having that color on that side. It’s a simple system repeated ad nauseum with different results, and that gameplay is surprisingly pleasing.

The real winner in Miracle Merchant is Thomas Wellman, the brilliant artist behind the characters and cards. His fantasy-cartoon style fits Miracle Merchant perfectly, and the customers he designs are beautiful and diverse and aesthetically gorgeous to see.
