20th November 1752 birth of English poet and forger Thomas Chatterton, a child genius, Chatterton published imaginary 15th century poetry under the alias Thomas Rowley. Upon the failure of his other works, and being denounced as a forger by Horace Walpole, the author of the first Gothic novel ‘The Castle of Otranto’, Chatterton commited suicide at the age of 17 by drinking arsenic. He would become a role model and influence to the later Romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats, and also the Pre-Raphaelite painters Dante Gabriel Rosetti, and Henry Wallis.
