In one of the most shocking upsets for years, Bronx underdog Iran Barkley stopped Thomas Hearns in three rounds to win the WBC middleweight title in Las Vegas #OnThisDay in 1988. The punch appeared to come out of nowhere, catching Hearns flush on the chin and sending him down like a puppet whose strings had suddenly been cut. What made the ending even more dramatic was that it came completely against the run of play. “I have no excuse for why I lost this fight,” reflected Hearns. “Iran Barkley was a better man than I was.” “I’ll give retirement serious thought.” An emotional Barkley, at one point breaking down as he paid tribute to former light-middleweight champion Davey Moore who had tragically died three days before. “He was more than a friend – he was more like a brother.” #boxing #BoxingNews #HearnsBarkley #IranBarkley #ThomasHearns (at Las Vegas Hilton Hotel)
