Canute was shattered. His heart clenched and squeezed in pain.
Ragnar is dead.
And the young prince is helpless.
They had just left on their sleds with Canute being quiet in one of them. He had no idea what to think, Ragnar? Dead? After all these years? Why? Who?
Thorfinn, who was assigned to be his personal bodyguard by the bastard Askelland, glanced at him.
Prince Canute has always been quiet, timid and he'd often hide behind Ragnar's back when overwhelmed but now that the conehead was gone, who is he gonna hide behind?
Even after all the pain Thorfinn suffered physically, mentally and emotionally throughout the years, nothing could ever beat the pain of losing his father right in front of him.
so he could somewhat relate but for Thorfinn, at least he had a last look at his dad
Canute on the other hand, who regarded Ragnar as his father, was absent during the latter's death. He didn't get to witness Ragnar's last moments.
Just more questions and absolutely no closure at all, no goodbyes or final words.
The young viking boy could see a tear slide down the royal's cheek. He must be devasted but can Thorfinn even do something for him?
Prince Canute wiped the tear away and continued staring at his lap.
The sleds all stopped abruptly. Thorfinn looked up as Askelland approached them.
"We're resting here tonight, stay close to his highness" Thorfinn responded with a grunt.
"Where's my duel, old man?"
"Cram it, kid, not the time for that" The old man Askelland looked distressed which was rare but Thorfinn thought nothing of it.
"Whatever" The boy rolled his eyes and shifted in his seat to try and nap. Canute still remained silent.
While the other men hollered, chattered and drank their asses off, Thorfinn and Canute were still in their sled. The air was cold, their breaths visible to the air as the two shivered.
Thorfinn got up from his seat and sat down next to the royal, covering them both with the blanket he found on the sled.
Canute muttered a small "thank you" and resumed looking at his lap. He must be thinking about Ragnar.
Honestly, Thorfinn has gotten tired of the gloomy air so he took a big breath, not really sure of how to proceed with 'comforting' the prince.
"Aren't you tired of looking at your lap?" Canute was a bit surprised, this was sudden, Thorfinn usually speaks so roughly, without a care of the consequences of his words but for the first time, Thorfinn actually seemed to be choosing his words first before speaking.
Thorfinn pointed at the sky.
"The moon.." Canute followed Thorfinn's hand and was pleasantly greeted by the powerful gleam of a full moon.
"Are you trying to comfort me?"
Thorfinn scoffed. He didn't want to admit that.
"And? What if I was?"
Canute chuckled softly
"Thank you"
It didn't make thoughts of Ragnar completely vanish, Canute still felt extreme anguish and grief but it comforted him a little bit to know someone other than Ragnar cared for him enough to try and comfort him.
