Release of the Day: ABOVE THIS WORLD - "End of Days" (Thorp) -- Despite Thorp Records putting together a wide variety of bands during their run, Above This World would be a centering force of the kind of metallic hardcore the label cultivated. Formed from members of Sworn Vengeance, Hoods, and Powerhouse, "End of Days" effectively swiped elements from the aforementioned. The groove and melody of Powerhouse, the gruff edge of Hoods, and the occasional metallic sting of SV. A mixing of tempos gives this LP an effective pacing through its 30 minutes, and there's definitely dance-floor sensibilities in the songs "Adversity" and "True," among others. Like so many 'supergroup' offerings, "End of Days" doesn't always click, and the recording's suffocation of the lead vocals does it no favors, but if early 2000s groove-laden hardcore is your thing, this is a solid catalog cut.
