I tried going vegan, and I lasted about a year. A lot of people here are mentioning protein or iron, but the thing I couldn't get enough of was calcium. And the way I figured it out was MASSIVE muscle spasms in my legs, usually while I was sleeping. As in, the first time they happened my parents almost needed to take me to the hospital. They happened once in a while, until I started eating dairy again (vegetarian). lo and behold, I got it back on track, and I haven't had once since.
