So the other day I was talking about needing to start getting my Fionna cosplay together. I’ve cosplayed as Marceline, but Fionna’s more my speed in physical characteristics. My SO has done a marvelous Marshal Lee. In any case, he asked me if I didn’t want to do one of the gems, none of which would really suit my physical stature. (I’m not outside of doing this, but there’s a certain level at which I personally don’t want to have to work with as I’m a lazy cosplayer.)  So he said, “We should go as Lars and Sadie.” Omg, Sadie would be almost perfect for me! I’m a bit too thin for her, but I’m super freaking pale, short, and blonde, and my SO is tall and gangly. If he didn’t have luscious long, dark brown hair, I’d say we should do it, but I wouldn’t even know how to start at tackling Lars’s hair without going too drastic with my SO’s hair or a lot of prosthetics that I’m not willing to put work into. Haha

I unfortunately don’t have time today to spend on all this, but I pretty much generally agree with everything you said here. The ending was always weird to me, and yet, I’m still somehow happy. I think I always chose to just believe that we get to see them in the euphoria of having survived, and the consequences will set in over time. I fully realize how that doesn’t answer A LOT of questions, and there’s no reason to stop theorizing on others. I’ve considered the ending being a sort of dream sequence, but who knows. lol And I definitely agree with you on Shizuru/Natsuki. Canonically, they are NOT a good couple, but I get the popularity. I get the desire of wanting to see a Healthy same-sex couple portrayed and how Shizuru and Natsuki are the closest two females characters to canonically be in love (even if one doesn’t have romantic feelings). I can’t help but believe that Shizuru lying with Natsuki is More explicit even than Wataru (if my memory serves), as we actually get some animation beyond Natsuki falling asleep. I wish it wasn’t; I hate that that’s a dynamic they used when they didn’t need to, but I won’t invalidate people’s concerns about that dynamic just because I WISH it were otherwise. Anyway, I have to go, but this is fun. Discussing this stuff is lots of fun ^.^

The survival factor definitely plays into it. It's late, so at the moment I won't dig into that fic where I had a bit of a timeline going, but I don't believe the finale took place close to the graduation we see in the epilogue. I feel like looking for confirmation later, but the school likely had to fix some damaged property after everything that happened. I definitely see the events of the Festival having far-reaching consequences on their minds, which will take a good while to sort out. Fortunately their loved ones were also resurrected and can help them heal. 

(And when all else fails, they can always turn to karaoke! ^^) 

Fortunately for Shiznat, many of the Mai Hime fics with that pairing seem to take the AU route. The fun of writing AU situations aside, that could very well mean that a lot of shippers do realize how messed up Shizuru was. 

Shizuru doing lying down next to Natsuki--could be anything of course, but that's what it looks like to me--is indeed much more explicit than Wataru and Yukariko. We only saw him drugging Yukariko and looking at her like this:

Which is disturbing, but doesn't actually tell us much except "he's a creepy bastard." That's the vibe he gives me though, especially when he manhandles her in episode 18. And then, when Yukariko's pregnancy was showing in the epilogue, that's exactly where my mind went. 

I agree; I wish it just went all-out with the horrible stuff and showed us, but on the other hand, I suppose this leaves room for interpretation. It also avoids a more mature rating and possible triggers. Still seedy as all hell, though.
