Inescapable | 1980 | Gareth and Marlene

So far this entire year had been rather trying. The things that was expected of him both by his family and then by the Dark Lord seemed to be conflicting now, which didn’t make sense to him. He’d been aligned with the Dark Lord for decades now, and for his family to just not realize this, for them to just now be grasping how far things had to go for true change to take effect, it was frustrating. But just because it was frustrating didn’t mean that Gareth was going to give up. It didn’t mean that he was going to stop trying to convince his family that he was still the man that they knew and loved.
His wife had moved out of their house in the south of France and into the English cottage that had been a wedding gift from her parents. She’d asked him to stay away and none of his children were talking to him, but after months and months, Eden had finally agreed to talk things out. Which was all he could ask for he supposed. And Ellie didn’t immediately leave the room as soon as he appeared anymore, so that was good. Maven, who had always seemed to want to avoid conflict, was doing just that. He was always working and hadn’t said much to Gareth since incident, but he supposed it was Evan’s anger that the most confusing. He could understand why they were all upset, he wasn’t daft. But Evan seemed more upset than the rest of them. And he was the only one who seemed surprised by that too. It was all very strange.
And just when he was making progress with his wife and some of his children, this bloody article had been printed in the Daily Prophet and he knew that all his hard work to win his wife back was going to be for not because Marlene McKinnon had decided to slander his name.
He had the paper in one hand as he marched through the office. It was fairly late and there weren’t a lot of people there, otherwise he wouldn’t have confronted her here. He knocked on her door instead of barging in, knowing that he needed to remain restraint and careful. When the door opened he pressed his lips together and looked her over. “Having a good evening are we?” He asked calmly.
