The roar of the crowd echoed through the stone walls of the underground cells, as routine as clockwork before every fight. She had grown accustomed to it and though it repulsed her to her core, after all this time, she got a twisted thrill from it. There was nothing else she had on this godforsaken planet, in the arena, it was killed or be killed and there was no room for compassion. Compassion in her had died long ago, drowned in the blood of all opponents she had slaughtered.
A great iron door separated her from the battlefield, the ground beneath her rumbled with the rhythm of thunderous applause. The voice of the grandmaster echoed through and the crowd cheered louder with every word he spoke. It sickened her how their zombified brains clung to the euphoria the mere sound of his voice would give. Like slaved without shackles they obeyed him, there was not another being whose death would give her more satisfaction than his. Often, in the midst of battle, she would imagine it was his throat that she was cutting.
A new contender was announced, Aleina did not pay attention enough to catch his name --- A name did not matter, they would not live long enough for it to matter. Sometimes she would look at her reflection, the stoic face staring back at her would falter and she would weep at what she had become. Those moments grew fewer and further between with every passing day.
‘And now, the moment you’ve all waited for! Here again, our angel of death!’
Mechanisms turned, the sound of metal on metal clashing together brought the door before her to rise slowly and she stepped out of the darkness. The light ignited the paleness of her skin and she almost glistened.
She carried no weapons, no shield, with armour that was there as much to emphasis her form as it was to protect. The opponent, she did not look at them at first, as she wandered to the centre of their battlefield she gave no passing glance toward them. A continued cheer came from the crowd, they roared and spat their lust for the impending violence, only when the grandmaster spoke again did they fall silent --- Only then did she turn to face her opposition. Her face empty and her eyes emotionless.
