hayden wasn’t looking for anyone when she met frankie but she had felt a small bit of chemistry from the first time they talked, which intrigued her and made her want to spend more time with him. she hung out with him here and there after work when she went out but what really made her realize she liked him is when she spent the majority of her room mate’s new years party basically glued to his hip. she didn’t really meant to cling to him but she was having a good time and from what she could tell, he looked like he was too. the kiss at midnight was what surprised her the most but she enjoyed every moment of it. ever since that night though, she found herself waiting for his text messages and his visits at her job. she even stopped by the record shop on her lunch breaks and sometimes it was to drop him off some lunch and other times it was just to see him. either way, something was brewing between the two of them and she couldn’t get enough.

she was having a relatively slow day at work and she was waiting for anyone to walk through the door so that she could stop pretending she was cleaning up her station. hayden turned to greet whoever was walking through the door and the bright smile that appeared on her face when she saw frankie was almost embarrassing. “coming by to see me or coming by to let me do your makeup?” she teased, moving toward him and giving him a hug to greet him. she pulled back and looked up at the taller man, “so, what do you say? you going to let me show you what i’m capable of?”

Hayden noticed her linger after class behind her classmates that had rushed out of his audio production course. “I have another course in an hour, I have no time to speak with you right now.” Hayden tried as best as he could to brush her off during the day. They couldn’t be seen together or he’d be thrown out of the college with zero prospects of a job. Letting his student seduce him the first time for a passing grade had been stupid. But yet they continued their tryst throughout the semester. He’d breathe easier once she wasn’t his student anymore that was for sure.

He had sent the boys out for the night, it was towards the tail end of the tour and god was he ready for a break. He loved the work he did, but he felt like he never got a moment of peace, as ironic as it was fans bombarded him all day and night. He stood under the spray of the shower in the arena other than the cleaning crew he was the only one left. Feeling someone sneaking up behind him he quickly turned them and pressed them to the cold tile wall. “Jesus, what are you doing here? You know the cleaning staff can find us.” To the world he was single it was just easier, he didn’t have to share her and the image didn’t slip. Pulling back slowly he shook his head. “I didn’t think I’d see you until after the Nashville show.” His eyes scanned over her equally naked frame. “I might have to frisk you make sure you didn’t bring something in.”

Hayden exhaled heavily and rubbed his eyes from the sting of saltwater on the breeze. His destination loomed ahead. The journey there had been no small feat; the lighthouse had always seemed so close when looking out from the solid background of Clocktown, but once he was finally walking there, for the first time ever, it seemed that the building kept pulling itself further and further away like a reluctant spectre. He heaved his tool-bag into his other hand, regretting the heavier equipment he had packed into it just in case and plucked at the great metal knocker of the lighthouse door.

He knew very little about the job he had been asked to do, and even less about the person who had asked him to do it. The request had come by letter, vaguely written and requesting he come specifically at this time and on this date. It was signed elegantly at the bottom: Faye, it said, as though that was all the explanation that was needed.

When the door creaked open, Hayden had to pull his eyes from examining the cracked facade of the old building. A lot of repair work needed there - the exposed boards were likely to soak in too much moisture if left untreated like they were. Refocusing on the person before him, he affected his best smile and said, “Hi, I’m Hayden, the uh, handyman from the town. Are you... Faye?”
