Tetsuo:  The Iron Man (1989)

Frenetic, budgetless and dysfunctional, “Tetsuo” shatters the screen with shocking vibrato.  Watch the metamorphosis of a salaryman, whose transformation into a deranged lo-tech metal-machine seriously complicates his love life.  Can he battle the undead Metal Fetishist—a demon whose death he has already caused?  Violence and madness riddle this flick to an Industrial beat—from the phallic power drill death bit, to the tentacle-type “touching.”  Thought “Pi” could have gone further?  Wondering why you endured “Tokyo Gore Police?”  Try Tetsuo!  Featuring director/actor Shinya Tsukamoto, actor/camerawoman Kei Fujiwara and Chu Ishikawa’s bang-on soundtrack (1989).

Sexless salaryman Tsuda perpetually sinks away from fiance to work and back again, like a pointless mote of dust in a concrete and steel Tokyo.  The fiance, Hizuru, blands away eating crackers and watching late night black and white Orson Welles.  But when prizefighter Kojima enters their lives, passion, violence and body mutilation become penetrating to a beat.  An echo of Tetsuo, Tokyo Fist features Shinya Tsukamoto’s visceral speed style in a saturated color palette and Chiu Ishikawa’s kinetic bashing soundtrack.  Featuring Tetsuo–writer, director, producer in another rat-race parable, his real life Brother as the boxer, and Kahori Fujii under the needle.
