Photo Friday: Jena in Thüringen (Thuringia)
Jena is a rather small city, even tho being the second largest city of Thuringia and has a middle-age character: small streets with old-looking buildings. However, original old buildings are nowhere to be found, since most of it was destroyed during the war. During GDR times, a large tower was built in the middle of the city (and as expected of the GDR architecture, it looks hideous).
During the end of the 19th century, it developed to an industrial city and is known for Carl Zeiss, whose company still exists today - it’s known for it’s glass manufacturing and also precision mechanics. However, it started out with manufacturing lenses. After reunification, the city started to change its course from an industrial to a cultural and scientific city.
The university of Jena, the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität, was founded in 1558 and is the biggest one in Thuringia with around 20.00 students. The faculty buildings are spread throughout the city, but luckily the city is small so everything is around the corner.
Fun fact: I headcanon this to be Lutz’ birthplace and therefore it was for me personally interesting to explore. However, i was a little disappointed, because it’s a small, boring city tbh.
