What if, after the movie, Thang is so oblivious that he doesn’t realize that Stuff is into him and just assumes there’s nothing there so he doesn’t try to pursue it at all.
Bog notices and has know them forever and knows how perfect they are for each other. He feels bad because he sympathizes with Thang thinking that there’s no way anyone would be into him. So he starts trying to discreetly set up opportunities for Thang to realize that Stuff likes him and nudge one of them into making a move.
One day Marianne notices and is like
“Bog are you...matchmaking?”
“What?! Of course not! Don’t be ridiculous. It’s just, I know he likes her, he just can’t see it right now. I’m just gently guiding in the right dir...OH MY GODS I AM! I’VE BECOME MY MOTHER!”
