Thunderstorms

I do not like to admit that I am afraid of thunderstorms. Not all of them bother me. Only the ones with thunder so loud you can't hear people in the same room, rain so hard you can't see in front of you, wind so powerful that homes shake and trees fall on the powerlines. It's not the actual storm I am afraid of. I love to dance and splash in the rain. It's what happens during the calm after the storm.

A tornado touched down in my neighborhood during my freshmen year. Homes, business and parks were destroyed. No one died and only two were injured. I did not know those numbers when I went to school the next day. In the school bus I saw all the devastation out the window. Piles of rubbish where there used to be homes. Trees blocking the road making us late to school. Some schools completely cancelled because of direct damage to them. My school was not cancelled, but it might has well of been.

When I see storms that I am afraid of I do not see the rain nor the wind. I see the empty hallways of my high school the day after the tornado. I remember friends not texting me back. I see the news crews and people from the rich side of town gazing at the damage to my neighborhood. They did not help us. They did not donate money to families who no longer had homes. They did not help people cut up and move branches off of cars. They just stared. Probably thinking thank god this did not happen to us. Better the ghetto of Minneapolis then our precious shops and homes. I have never been here before, am I going to get stabbed? I wish the storm did kill some of these hoodlums, clean up Minneapolis a bit.

I do not like to admit that I am afraid of thunderstorms. Whenever the bad ones happen, all I can see are the empty halls of my high school. All I can think about is whether after the rain dies down and the sun comes up whether or not the sky is going to turn green and if I will hear again what sounds like an approaching train.

My brain will then travel to the most personal way the tornado affected me. My aunts now x-wife almost died because of it. She was walking down the stairs to the basement when one of the huge glass bricks flew through the window and barely missed her head. I wonder how different my life would be if she died. My aunt would be a sad widower instead of a depressed and abused x. If the tornado did not touch down, they would not have been able to afford the house next door because it would not have been damaged. They would not have rented it out only for my aunts now x-wife to start living in and that’s the way I tell you I don't love you anymore honey. Maybe the divorce would have been cleaner. Maybe it would not have happened at all.

I do not like to admit that I am afraid of thunderstorms. When a bad one is happening like it is now, it becomes difficult for me to hide my fear. Once the rain and the thunder stops, what will happen after the calm?
