Seriously, watch where you’re going!

There was a path that wound through all the various athletic fields, then connected to the one that did a big loop around that part of campus. Octavio liked to run both every morning, trying to beat his previous morning’s time. Unfortunately, running the same track meant that he saw the same things. He’d started to learn what mornings each team practiced, and where. Not that it really mattered much to him. This school still didn’t have a track and field team, and that was straight up offensive.
Consistent scenery meant Octavio was bored. He had to find other ways to occupy himself. Such as today, he had passed the (American) football fields and was craning his neck to watch and contemplate the goal posts. He wondered what kind of lift he might have to get to get launched through one of them, and if he could set up and execute before getting arrested by campus security. This meant that he wasn’t watching where he was going.
Wednesday morning, the woman’s football (soccer) team used the field. Octavio knew this, and yet he wasn’t paying attention when they were crossing the path from the locker room to the field. He only looked when one of the girls shouted “Watch out!” He proceeded to twist to the side, narrowly avoiding collision with some of the girls, brushing shoulders with some of the others, and before he had time to react, completely bowling over one at the very end.
The impact caused Octavio to trip, fall, eat dirt, roll, and eventually end up on his back, staring up at the sky. After a very brief moment to process what just happened, he was laughing.
