Penelope looked at her friend with a guilty expression on her face. She had not meant to make Kate upset when she made a joke after receiving the compliment about her hair. It was just habit at this point, and the remark had slipped out before she could stop it. “My apologies, Kate. I did not mean to pain you. With my.. mother and the rest of the ton, their compliments are usually more backhanded if anything else, and it seems I have developed a defense mechanism for them. It just slipped out.”

Penelope’s gaze shifted from where she was watching Edwina to Kate at her friend’s reply. It was quite nice to have another friend. Eloise was still her dearest friend of course, but while Eloise had men after her attention, Penelope did not, which often left her on the sidelines. Kate’s sharp wit had endeared her to Penelope, recognizing a kindred spirit. 

A breath of fresh air sounded nice, but she knew that she could not really leave the floor without her mother noticing. How her mother expected her to attract suitors when she was forced to wear an outfit that made her look like an overripe citrus fruit, she would never understand. Still, she smiled and linked her arm through Kate’s.

“A turn around the floor would be nice. Have any of the gentlemen here attracted your interest?” She asked, her head tilting slightly in curiosity. Edwina may have gained the most interest, but Kate was just as beautiful and would make any man a fine wife.

Penelope tried to stay still as her friend started to braid her hair. It was the first night of the house party at Aubrey Hall, and she could not help but feel awkward. Her one source of expressing herself completely was off-limits during the party, since the guest list was too small to hide as Lady Whistledown. She was glad that Kate was here also, though. It was nice to have another friend along with her, otherwise, she would probably stick to herself. Eloise was too busy attempting to dodge the suitors her mother had invited for her. 

Still, just because she couldn’t write about her observations, did not mean that she did not see or overhear things. And she needed a distraction at the moment, unless she wanted her thoughts to be fully dominated by him. 

“I’m sorry if it is a mess, my hair seems to have a mind of it’s own at times,” she murmured slowly, wondering how best to broach the topic she was interested in. “I heard you played Pall Mall this afternoon. Did you have fun? Eloise told me once that she and her siblings can get a bit.. competitive.”

“  i should think so,  ”    he replied, a knowing smile on his lips. but he did not release his grip on his wife’s fingers. instead, he kept pulling her gently back towards the center of the floor where couples were lining up for the next dance. they had already danced together three times that evening -- far more than was considered respectable for married couples. any more than two dances was unseemly! or so the grey-haired old gossips who poured over the latest whistledown would say. but anthony could not care less -- if anything, he found an almost perverse pleasure in shocking them. but more than anything, it was about kate. he had not cared much for dancing before they met. too often it came with expectations or his mother’s schemes to find him a bride... but now that he was married? he would dance with his wife as often as he pleased. and in the months since they’d wed, he found it pleased him a great deal... as discreetly as could be managed in a crowded ballroom, he brought her palm to his lips, kissing her through the fabric of her glove.    “  but i rather think social ruination will become us, don’t you?  ”

even lewis was pleasantly surprised at how well the last quadrille had gone. normally, he could not get through a single dance without stepping on someone’s toes, spinning away with the wrong partner, or tripping over his own feet. he was quite sure he had not been graceful by any stretch of the imagination, but he had at least managed to make his way through the dance with all the correct steps and with his partner’s toes intact, which was saying a great deal. after pausing to take a long swig of his wine, he wiped his lips and replied, with more cheer than usual, “ you must count yourself fortunate, miss sharma. i assure you, i am generally far less competent on the dance floor. it is a small miracle that your toes remain unbruised. ”

The words are familiar. Penelope had heard them spoken to her by Eloise multiple times, but she still doesn’t quite believe it when she hears them come out of her friend Kate’s mouth. Her years of being exposed to her mother and then being thrust into society’s eyes before she was ready had taken their toll on her. Still, there was no reason to burden her friend with her low opinion of herself, so she gave what was hopefully a convincing smile. 

“Good things do happen to me Kate, otherwise I would not have met you or Eloise. I am perfectly.. contented with my lot in life. I may be destined to end up a spinster, but there are certainly worse fates.”
