Lost in Shadow | Thyme's 2024 Media Thread
It's been a bit, and I'm late on this little review. To be honest though, I probably shouldn't be writing entire reviews on all the games I play, it's exhausting.
Developer: Hudson Soft Platform: Wii (Wii U) Release: January 4th, 2010 Genre: Puzzle-platformer
Summary: A boy's shadow has been separated from his body and cast down from the tower. Now the boy's shadow must climb back up and return to his body. On the way up, solve various shadow and light puzzles, and escaping the shadow beast.
Thoughts: It's been about a month since I've finished the game, but I remember most of what I liked and didn't like about it. First off, I enjoyed the game, I had a fun time playing through it.
The light puzzles were fun, adjusting the lighting to change the shape of the environment, stretch it, shorten it, open a new path, etc. Movement itself was fine, and the atmosphere was great. I don't really remember the music, but I do remember that sometimes it would kind of have that grating feeling I'm not a fan of.
Now, for some things I didn't really enjoy; the combat was janky, it wasn't the worst, but it wasn't particularly good or interesting either. You gain experience, and levels, as you kill creatures, but they get also stronger as you progress, it always felt like it took the same amount of hits every time, unless you were backtracking later on.
The other thing I wasn't a big fan of was that large puzzles often involved the same room where you see a closed gate, unlock it from across the map, navigate all the way back and open another gate across the map. It wouldn't be so bad if movement wasn't so slow.
Anywho, the story was enjoyable. Finding memories to discover some of the lore, if any, was fun. It's very light on storytelling, but that's now something I mind, I like figuring things out. The last boss was fine, wasn't particularly hard or challenging.
Conclusion: I liked this game, it's a fun puzzle game, but because of its sluggish movement, janky and somewhat unresponsive combat, and constant back-and-forth across maps, it's not really something I would play again. At least not right away.
I'm almost sure I'll get a different ending if I collect all the memories...
