Fish effigy pendant

Nariño, Tierradentro, or Quimbaya

A.D. 500–1550

Object Place: Colombia, Southwestern highlands

Gold pendant in the form of a fish. A suspension ring is formed by a thin curled wire attached to the fish’s tail. Two perforations flank the head, which allow for additional attachment.

By far one of the best things I did in Colombia was the visit/hike/trek to the Tierradentro Archaeological Park. The park is a series of underground tombs dating back 1000 years to pre Colombian times. Little is known about these people and the area has long been off limits to tourists due to poor roads and guerrilla activity.

Object Place: Colombia, Southwestern highlands

Human effigy adornment, likely a pendant bead. The figure wears a semicircular headdress and sits atop a trapezoidal form that recalls bird tails in other Colombian art traditions, although here it may represent a low bench.

Zoomorphic (?) adornment, likely a bead-like pendant from a necklace. Two perforations near one end allow for attachment.
