Zoo hit with £450,000 court bill after keeper mauled to death by tiger

A zoo has been fined £255,000 for health and safety failings after a keeper was mauled to death by a tiger. South Lakes Safari Zoo was also hit with a further £42,500 fine for other health and safety law breaches, including one when another keeper fell from a ladder while preparing to feed big cats. The company, whose sole director is 55-year-old zoo founder David Gill, was ordered to pay an additional £150,000 in prosecution costs in the wake of the death of Sarah McClay, 24. After the case, Miss McClay's mother, Fiona, said: "I feel like the zoo pleading guilty, that went a good way to that process... that was a step for us to move forward knowing that somebody else was responsible."

The result was as tragic as it was foreseeable. The tiger attacked and Sarah was fatally injured.

Glasgow-born Miss McClay was killed in 2013, when a Sumatran tiger called Padang escaped into a tunnel used by keepers at the zoo in Dalton-in-Furness, south Cumbria. Passing sentence at Preston Crown Court, Mr Justice Turner said it should not have been possible for the tiger to gain access to where Ms McClay was working. He added: "But as a substantially contributory cause as a result of a door-closing mechanism failure, it did." Mr Gill had faced individual charges on the same allegations but was formally acquitted earlier this week.

Halloween scare: Woman who wanted to pet tiger is bitten at zoo

A woman has been cited for criminal trespass after she suffered a serious hand injury while attempting to pet a tiger inside an Omaha zoo. Jacqueline Eide, 33, is being treated at Creighton University Medical Center after she was bitten on her left hand on Halloween night at Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. Officers were called to the hospital to handle a disturbance involving Eide, who was being aggressive with staff and "showed signs of intoxication", according to police. She had apparently broken into the compound after dark.

When she was reached into the cage, she was bitten causing severe trauma to her hand.

Omaha police statement

Officials at the zoo told the Omaha World-Herald they believe Eide was bitten by Mai, an 18-year-old Malayan tiger. Executive director Dennis Pate said additional cameras were being installed. He told the newspaper that security staff are on duty at the zoo around the clock, and security cameras, path lighting and computer-controlled locks monitor exit and entry. He added: "The safety and security of our guests and animals are always a priority at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. We will continue to keep security a top priority for zoo guests and animals."
