How would your cats deal
It kinda depends on the dog. I've had a couple of friends' dogs visit my house, and the cats were okay with the more nervous dog who kept a fair distance away from them and didn't make sudden movements around them. But when I pet-sat for my friend's 9-month-old labrador puppy who WANTS TO BE EVERYONE'S FRIEND ALL THE TIME, the dog left the house with several scratches on her face. (The owner was fine with this - she wanted the puppy to learn that maybe not everyone wants to be your friend, even if you repetitively check back with them every five minutes.)
Another issue is that I'm fairly certain that by myself I don't have enough energy or drive to supply a young dog/puppy with the entertainment it needs, and getting an older/larger dog would present a more difficult subject to train appropriate behaviors with if they didn't mesh well with the cats. (I LOVE big dogs, but when you're trying to teach a dog to leave a cat alone, it's a lot easier to physically restrain a small dog than a large one.)
Also I told my fiance he could pick out our next pet (which will presumably be a dog), so no impulse dogs for me. :I
