The brisk salt wind of late spring swept across the wide, pebbled shore of Ribe in the realm of the Danes , carrying the cries of gulls and the rhythmic thud of waves against beached longships. The trading season had only just begun after the winter freeze, and the shoreline was alive with activity. Dragon-prowed vessels lay pulled up on the strand, their keels resting on the smooth stones, oars stacked neatly beside them. Merchants, raiders, and freemen moved between the ships and makeshift stalls, haggling over goods freshly brought from across the sea.
Jason Red-Hood stood at the prow of his beached longship, Fenrir’s Fang, arms crossed over his broad chest as he oversaw his crew. At twenty-five winters, the young jarl already carried the respect of seasoned warriors. His fiery red hair was braided tightly with iron rings that glinted in the pale northern sunlight, and a thick, reddish beard framed his strong jaw and sharp green eyes.
