Interview: drummer Tim Kuhl
Last week I covered C. Gibbs’ concert while he was in town (http://greensparty.tumblr.com/post/124195049668/concert-review-c-gibbs). I was especially excited because his drummer is Tim Kuhl, who is also the drummer for The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (I named their album Midnight Sun my #1 album of 2014 http://greensparty.tumblr.com/post/110112106878/best-albums-of-2014).
In addition to The GOASTT and C. Gibbs, Tim is actually promoting his own album 1982 (https://soundcloud.com/flyingmoonlight/sets/tim-kuhl-1982/s-1LKja) as well right now. It has just been released digitally and on cassette tape. His music is really tight. He’s a good utility player in that he can keep the beat in a lot of different types of sounds. His jazz and classical roots show through on the new album as well.
This past year has been a huge year for The GOASTT. They have opened for Beck, played shows with Flaming Lips and this month they open for Primus and Dinosaur Jr. What is it like going from some of the bigger outdoor shed venues he’s been playing with GOASTT to then playing a smaller venue like the corner of The Middle East with C. Gibbs?
“There’s really no difference. Whether you’re playing for 10 people or 10,000 people, you just give it your all.”
Tim is based in Brooklyn, NY right now. NYC has always had a great music scene, whether it was punk in the 70s or the indie rock wave of the early 00s. It’s still very vibrant today. What’s your feeling on the scene as it is now?
“There’s so many great musicians and you just find yourself becoming friends with, in a room with, or playing shows with many of these folks. That was how I met Sean [Lennon of The GOASTT]. We just had a lot of musician friends and before we knew it, I was sitting in with him.”
The new album 1982 was composed on an iPad while Tim was on tour, all over the world, with The GOASTT. The album is full of melodic ambient sounds. Watch out Moby! What’s next for promoting this album?
“We just did a release party at Union Pool in Brooklyn. We got a limited number of cassettes released and vinyl’s coming out next month.”

In the history of rock, there’s been a history of drummers who became leaders: Steven Tyler, Don Henley, Phil Collins, Ringo Starr, Dave Grohl and Stuart Copeland! Add Tim to that pantheon! This coming week Tim embarks on a national tour with The GOASTT. Check him out!
