“ ‘Steal’ Is Alleged in Sale Of Wood,” Toronto Star. May 19, 1932. Page 1. ---- Fuel Cut for Needy Reported Sold ---- North Bay, May 19. - “It’s a straight steal - no doubt about it,’ said J. T. McDougall, crown timber agent at North Bay, at the close of an investigation into the sale by North Bay city of 150 cords of charity fuel wood to the northern development branch for use at trans-Canada highway camps. The arrangement was carried through, according to sworn documents in the investigator’s hands, by Mayor Richardson, Alderman W. G. Buttbrook, and George Lafleur at Ferris.
Mr. Lafleur testified he paid $600 to the city treasurer under the arrangement, and in exchange received $800 from the northern development branch.
