High elevation Western Red Cedar and lowland Western Red Cedar belong to the same species, Thuja plicata, but they differ due to their growing conditions.

High elevation cedars grow more slowly, resulting in denser, finer-grained wood with tighter growth rings, often making the wood more durable and uniform in color with fewer knots. The unique qualities of high elevation Western Red Cedar make it especially prized for certain log home projects.
