This isn’t Animaniacs related, but I really want to talk about my favorite album by my favorite band. I just really want people to know about it because no one talks about how amazing this album is. The album is called Time.
Time is an album released in 1981 by Electric Light Orchestra. It is a concept album about a man who time travels from 1981 to 2095, is astounded by the technology, and wishes he could be with his past romance. Each song has a different take on how he is feeling throughout what he is going through, and every single one of them is astounding. I won’t spoil every song, but I want to talk about my favorites.
Prologue/Twilight: These are technically two different songs, but the Prologue fades right into Twilight. The Prologue gives a spiel about the story, around a minute long, then Twilight starts.
“Twilight” is my second favorite song of all time. I can’t explain why I love it to much, I just do. As the name of the song suggests, the song is about a man who has fallen into a state of Twilight, which basically means his perception of reality is out of order. The song has my favorite lyric of all time; “It’s either real or it’s a dream, there’s nothing that is in between.” This song is famously used in Daicon IV, so if you are a fan of animation, I would highly recommend it. It is on YouTube. I can’t express my love for this song enough.
The second song I’d like to talk about is “The Way Life’s Meant to Be”. This is one of the most pleasing songs I’ve ever heard. A word I like to describe it as is satisfying, because if you are a music theory person, then these chord changes are amazing. I love it. The song is about the man wandering around an advanced civilization, and how upset he is about “ivory towers and its plastic flowers”. He wishes to see his loved one once more. It’s a very bittersweet song.
The final song I want to mention is “Rain is Falling.” This is actually my dad’s favorite off the album, with good reason. There are so many hidden details in the background of this song, with thunder and rain noises being one of them. It’s about the man’s depression about the future he is in. An amazing, somber song about his emotions and loneliness.
The rest of the album is just as amazing as the songs I mentioned. One of my favorite parts about it is that you never get the answer if it was real or a dream. It’s left to personal interpretation. The writer and mastermind behind the album, Jeff Lynne, doesn’t even know. ELO is my favorite band, and pretty much every song they write is completely astonishing. In fact, they released an album just last year in November, and it sounds straight out of the 70’s/80’s.
If you read all of this, I’d like to thank you. It’s hard to describe why I love this album so much without putting my thoughts down. There are hundreds of reasons why they are my favorite band and why this is my favorite album, but I put the major points here. It’s funny, ELO is my favorite band, but my favorite singer of all time is Billy Joel. Maybe one day I’ll do another form of this expressing my love for his music, too.
