Confidence in street photography

 A big part of street photography for me was overcoming the initial anxiety that comes with it. I imagine everyone feels nervous when they first go out on the street and take photos of strangers and the questions it imposes. In a way you sort of have to train yourself to just not care what other people think, everything is legal, and you’re only really breaking the “social norm” and I think its something that gets easier there you practice it. 

So far in my project I have only taken photos from a distance from my subject, most of the time they have no idea I've even taken the photo. I haven't yet mustered up the courage to go up to people and ask them for their photo, but the more I’m out and about, the more confidence I get and maybe I'll get to the point where I can do this.

Photographer Research – Harry Gruyaert & Linda Wisdom

I learned about Harry Gruyaert in lesson, Gavin suggested I looked at his work as he has a similar style from what I have already achieved.

Both of these photographers have a very similar to each other. Both of these photographers have a very keen eye for colour, again, matching colour of what people are wearing/ objects in the scene, with the colour of the surrounding areas. As well as this, a lot of these photos are desaturated, and some more where the main colour pops, which is again what I am trying to achieve.

Adobe Bridge + Camera Raw

Starting the editing process, I usually just import my photos straight into Lightroom, and have never used bridge before today. Both programs are very similar so organising and selecting photos so I found it easy to navigate.

The process starts with importing the photos, and then selecting which ones to keep and which to reject, which is rated in stars 1-5. I have just selected one star for photos I like and will look at to edit, and rejected the rest. These can be easily sorted in Bridge, once starred or rejected, they get put into their own separate folders.

As for editing the photos on Camera Raw, the program is pretty much identical to Lightroom in terms of workflow, so I have had no problem navigating it.

Again, I have been emphasised on the point of shooting in RAW, as the detail you can get out of an image in the shadows and highlights are much more sufficient that in a JPEG.

A view of the London Eye with an abstract perspective. The images were created with zooming and rotating the camera body at the same time to give them a spiral effect with the different lights from each pod from the Eye and different buildings.

The work of Aaron Yeoman at a Underground station with a slow shutter speed with trains passing past the camera. This work inspired me to carry out my own images of movable objects passing my camera with a slow shutter speed to give a abstract view of different angles of objects that the naked eye couldn’t see and the slow shutter speed delays the perspective of the lights and objects that our eyes would not be able to view.
