The Process: January 28
On Tuesday we were asked to come up with words related to time. It could be a quote, song lyric, book, etc., as long as it directly was contact to time in some form or fashion. Because we didn't know the assignment guidelines, I choose to use my journals as my inspiration. I started journaling off and on in 5th grade, and the top of each entry/page as a single line dedicated to the date. These pretty notebooks contain everything from comments about middle school crushes, to pain-filled prayers. They’ve evolved over the years, and contain much of me. Small things, big things, questions, answers, song lyrics, laughter, explicits, and everything in between. They represent time passing in my life.
Upon entering class on Thursday (10/25/18) we learned a little bit more about the choreographic requirements. Using our understanding of timing we were to make a (slow) 15 count phrase using our written time inspiration.
>> Because my original inspiration was so large, we decided it would be best if I narrowed it down to one specific entry.
THUS I picked January 28th.
January 28th I spent auditioning for Oklahoma City University, and it was a crazy weekend! It was right after I had auditioned here, and although I enjoyed my time at AU I really felt like I was supposed to go audition at OCU. It was exhausting and stressful and fun, all wrapped into one weekend, and I sat in a bed January 28th, and wrote the following lyrics,
“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders”
And although Oceans is an extremely overplayed song, I found it to be so comforting during that day. The idea that God had lead me to another state, that I might get to dance beyond high school, and that I simply need to trust the process. And that line played over and over in my head, as I walked through the 7 hour audition, unsure and scared, yet trying to trust in the unknown.
When going to choreograph my movement, I simply followed the lyrics and counts of the chorus, which turned out to be a mid-to-slow 16 count phrase. I then added a small transition to piece the single-time version and double-time version to my original paced choreography.
As we were leaving, the note was made that we should strive to be specific and drastic in the time-signature changes. Something to practice over the weekend as I clean :)
