"Skinning and deformation" just made me realize that all the other people out there probably just think we graphic artists are serial killers or something...
when I read it I was unsure whether it was speaking in graphic terms or if they just wanted somebody that knew anatomy really well; either way I was unalarmed

Personally, I worry about writing LGBTQ+, POC, etc., characters just because I’m afraid of getting something wrong. I don’t know everyone’s experiences, so I don’t want to incorrectly represent someone. Granted, my WIP takes place in a fantasy world, so it might not be the same for people there as it is here, anyways? I just want to make sure my characters aren’t giving a false view of any group. Guess I should research & talk to friends from these groups.
This is exactly what beta readers and sensitivity readers are for. To provide feedback on writing identities you are not part of but they are, so they can tell you where you messed up and how you can fix it.
And also, if you want to write a character of an identity you are not part of, there are so many resources specifically on how to write characters of X identity- tons of them just on tumblr. Googling “how to write x” will get you even more. Doing even more research and listening to the people who are of the identity helps even more.
Don’t make the worry of fucking up stop you. You’ll make mistakes, but there are ways to go about it that’ll catch them and help you fix them.
Research. Write. Listen. That’s all it takes.

@scarlet-titan I'm so sorry that happened to you. Being bullied sucks. There's literally no way to put a positive spin on the r-word, like gay people have reclaimed "queer". In the old days, if a doctor decided you were r*****ed, you might be institutionalized for life, a prison sentence just for existing with a different neurotype than everyone else. We can't reclaim it, because we weren't the ones originally using it in the first place. we can speak out against slurs.
If you really want to know how bad it was; he went through the trouble of eavesdropping on a conversation I was having with a friend to get my cell number. This was like 2003, so I just got a cell phone and when I was exchanging numbers with a friend, he eavesdropped just so he could call me and leave voicemails calling me the r-slur. I’m calling this very stalker-like behavior.
He would also call me it anytime he saw me in the hall. But he passed by so fast, I’d never have time to respond. He also knew he would get away with it because the administration always wanted a witness backing things up when you reported bullying incidents. Since I was the only one hearing him, I had no witnesses. I also call that policy bullshit since it clearly favors popular kids.
