The day of your funeral, when everyone was gathered at your house, crying, laughing, enjoying memories of you, I sat out front. I was numb to the world, and would remain that way for another year. But while I was sitting out there by myself, on the front porch that was no longer yours, somebody said something to me. Now I had no idea who that person was, I don't think I had ever met them before in my life. But they said to me "I can tell he meant the world to you. Don't let his memory down. Live your life like he would wish upon you, with no regrets." I was astonished, I don't recall having seen this person before or even after they spoke to me. But I still took those words to heart. The next year, a bomb could have been dropped and I don't think I would have noticed, I was so lost. But after that I tried to live the way I thought would honour you, with no regrets. I took that to mean saying and doing things whether I wanted to or not, because what if I missed an opportunity or an experience. Would that not be living with regret? That didn't work so well because I kept getting myself into dumb situations or ones that made me ultimately uncomfortable. But none the less, I persisted in my goal of no regrets. Recently, however I've been dwelling on this, amongst other things that make me think of you, like I do around this time of year. And I've come to this conclusion: living life with no regrets has nothing to do with the choices you make, but instead how you let them affect you. You can make a dumb mistake but if you look at it positively; what have I learned and what good came from this, then maybe that is living with out regrets. Maybe living with out regrets is really just living with hope and optimism. Maybe that is just silly thoughts, but it's what I'm going to work on until I come up with something better.
