Okay I kind of love the idea of a #TinderStrike.

Obviously a full Lysistrata sex strike isn’t sustainable. Folks in domestic violence relationships can’t deny sex without putting themselves in danger. And it’s not fair to expect people to forgo sex and intimacy entirely.

But this kind of strike doesn’t require abstinence. It just asks people to not arrange sex through an app that tracks your data. You can have sex with your lovers or people in your physical social circle, whose character you can actually vet. You just stop having sex via businesses that profit off the risk you’re taking.

Forgive me, trans readers, if I get cisnormative here:

Businesses like Tinder already struggle to attract women. So much so that they’ve made fake female accounts in the past. Even a small dip in the number of users in an area will affect the success of the app. Negative one-star ratings will also tank their finances.

Companies don’t care about you, but they absolutely care about their bottom line. If they feel threatened, we may be able to recruit some heavy-hitting lobbyists on our side to talk to politicians about the “economic consequences” of rolling back civil rights.

Male users may also reevaluate their stance on Roe vs Wade. People tend to get a lot less “apolitical” when their sex lives are on the line. There may even be converts.

A few weeks ago Jezebel did a story about how infamous white supremacist Richard Spencer had sworn off his alt-right buddies and was niw calling himself a moderate on his dating profile. Because “rabid white supremacist” tends to scare off potential dates.

Is Spencer sincerely repentant? Of course not, that’s not the point. The point is that even the worst of the alt-right folks may sell out their political buddies if they think it will get them sex. The more men publicly disavow Gilead-style government, even insincerely and for ulterior motives, the more distrust and doubt spread on their side.

I’m not saying a Tinder Strike is THE solution, but it could be fun to watch the chaos that unfolds.
