The first day at the Nightray manor was one of most bewildering of Leo's life so far. He brought nothing from the orphanage but a stack of books. Nothing else was required -- not even clothes, for the Nightray family got him spares from the servant's quarters until the family tailor could outfit a wardrobe to fit his station as Eliot Nightray's new manservant.
Neither was he required to handle any duties. Or responsibilities. When Leo asked Elliot what was expected, he shrugged. "Read those. I love talking about books. Oh, and try some lemonade and cake from the kitchen! I'll have Cook bring them out."
And so he read, uncomfortably, in the garden, feeling like the entire staff eyed him with envy. When the head butler inquired after Elliot's schedule, Elliot had simply scoffed, "Why would Leo be in charge of that?"
"Why wouldn't I?" Leo asked later, after dinner as they sat in the library. He had watched the other servants and maids bustle about the manor all day. It left him feeling extraneous.
Elliot brought down a chessboard from the shelf. "Care for a game?"
"Is this a game?" Leo snapped. He pushed up his glasses.
The nobleman looked crestfallen. "I also have checkers, if that's what you'd prefer."
"Why would you care what I'd like? Aren't I supposed to be, I don't know, polishing your boots or doing your laundry? Manservant stuff?"
"But this is manservant stuff." He grinned and now it was Leo's turn to envy that carefree expression. The power to dictate a household to do anything, and for him to do nothing. Envy and a twinge of something else, a light, fluttering realization that Leo wouldn't be able to name until weeks later.
He felt seen.
