Milori isn’t sure he knows what the word “home” means. No matter what language it’s spoken in, the concept remains foreign to him.
Jiā (家) was the winter hollow near the human village in Manchuria, where he had the start of his childhood with his parents and baby sister, a family of ethnic Korean fairies in 1860’s China. He was the doting older brother and the playful son until it was revealed he was a royal talent and his hollow’s queen, Queen Xiaotong, took him in to raise her successor. Young Longguo dutifully followed her around like a shadow, obeying her every suggestion, committing his future role to memory. Longguo never thought he’d leave his Hollow or the friendly human towns around it, as most of the fairies in his Hollow did. Queen Xiaotong had other plans, however, when she took stock of the rapidly changing world around their hollow and determined she must send her successor into the human world for a human man’s education, and ultimately, to the West to learn the languages and the ways of these foreigners playing in their land. Perhaps, Queen Xiaotong thought, her successor could make friends with humans and pixies alike who might see supporting the sovereignty of pixie hollows as the right thing to do, even if these Western countries seemed to think the land belonging to the humans around them was free for the meddling. In hindsight, Milori would understand that both young Prince Longguo and Queen Xiaotong were naive, even fools.
For a brief time immediately following the first World War, home was a younger royal talent fairy, training to take over rule of her Hollow in the south of England. She was funny, she was beautiful, and most importantly she understood him. It was cruel, how quickly he had to return to China. A 1922 telegram summoned him home, as Queen Xiaotong had fallen ill. Milori — Longguo – had managed to make it home before she died, Queen Xiaotong thus leaving the Hollow in his hands.
Milori thought he was home for good. Until a 1931 human military invasion of the land his Hollow was on led to its destruction and his surviving fairies had to flee north into the USSR.
Dom (дом), for a short period of time, was the Hollow in Soviet Russia where he and the remaining pixies from his birth hollow sheltered in. Specifically, in a forest near a village in Khabarovsk Krai. With both a pixie queen and an heir apparent, Milori had no real role in the Hollow. He spent time working with the kitchen-talents, making potions with the healing talents, practicing with the music-talents…anything to fill his time and to make friends. If he settled well into the Russian hollow under the hospitality of Queen Darya, hopefully his pixies would follow suit.
Word of the royal talent with no Hollow to preside over spread slowly, but it did eventually spread throughout the USSR’s pixie hollows. When the queen of the only winter hollow in Kyrgyz SSR began to feel the tree telling her it was nearing time for her life cycle to end, she panicked at first. Queen Zhyldyz had presided over her hollow in the countryside outside of Naryn for five hundred years and there had been nary a royal talent born. It was then when she received word of the royal talent, Lord Milori, living in Russia with no hollow of his own. Queen Zhyldyz sent several of her scout fairies to go to the hollow in Khabarovsk Krai, to send for the pixie lord. She suspected he was her heir.
Milori and most of his fairies from China followed the scouts to the hollow outside of Naryn. Some remained in Khabarovsk Krai, having Promised to pixies there, and some pixies born in Khabarovsk Krai left with Milori and their promise partners from China, with Queen Darya’s blessing.
Üy (үй), from 1955 onward, was the Hollow outside of Naryn. Kyrgyzstan was a harsh home, the dry, frigid mountains nothing like China or snowy Russia, but it was home nonetheless. The climate suited winter fairies even if the terrain was much less lush than what the fairies from Manchuria or Khabarovsk Krai were used to. The pixie hollow was not buried deep in a forest, rather, it was part of a small patch of woods in the Kyrgyzstan countryside. Milori would not and never did complain. After thirty-odd years of not being able to fulfill his duty to a Hollow, he was grateful when the pixie tree connected to him and confirmed Queen Zhyldyz’s suspicions that the hollowless pixie king was to be her heir.
The problem? Lord Milori did not yet speak Kyrgyz, the main language of her Hollow. He immediately began intensive Kygyz-language training and studied the culture of his new home, to earn the trust and respect of his future subjects. It helped, Milori noted, that he’d spent time in the Ottoman Empire, as Kyrgyz and Turkish were related. By the time Queen Zhyldyz handed her duties over to Lord Milori in 1963, she was confident in his ability to communicate with their Hollow.
Kyrgyzstan, while not his first or even second home, truly felt like it would be his last. That was, until, November 2023.
A forest fire suspected to be caused by land developers ravaged the small woods his hollow was in, taking it and many of his fairies with it. Milori could do nothing but watch as the Hollow that had been his home for nearly 70 years was destroyed.
In an effort to rescue a group of pixie children from the flames, Milori’s wings caught fire, damaged irreparably. He now arrives in England, to Swynlake, after hearing that the hollow here was both open to taking pixie refugees, and most importantly to Milori, the sovereignty of the hollow seemed to be respected by the human settlements around it.
