The End

So, this is it, The Great Unknown. I thought it would feel different. That it would be scary or exciting, or maybe a mix of both. Turns out, it just…is. And that’s more comforting than I could have ever imagined. And there are choices! Another pleasant surprise. I could rest, or start again, or just stay a while longer. I think that’s what I’m going to do, stay, and explore and learn and maybe get into a little trouble. It’ll be fun. And when I feel done, I’ll make a new choice and see where I go from there.

Soul Mates

This was supposed to be temporary, a place in between until she decided when she really wanted to be “when she grew up.” Now she has ties. Not the kind she ever expected or the kind she can explain to other people. When signing the lease papers they joked that the place was haunted, said they hoped she liked her new roommate. And she did. A lot. And he liked her too. Now, how could she leave? Was he bound to these walls? Could he connect to an object she could take with her? The only way to find out would be to try and so far that’s a risk neither is willing to take.

Retro Regrets

This place feels wrong. The floors and walls, the furniture, everything is too new. It all feels the same. Variations on a flat, bland theme. Why have they brought me here? A colorful echo of the past contrasted against cold stone. Unfamiliar hands touch me, turning me this way and that before setting me aside, to be forgotten for weeks on end.

I do not belong here. I do not think this will ever feel like home.

Goodbye/Hello

They both knew this day would come, when her mortality would collide with his immortality. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to share his gift with her, it was simply beyond his powers and abilities to do so. He held her hand, watching the peaceful smile fall from her lips for the last time. If his heart could have stopped, it would have.

“Oh honey, would you look at that?” a voice said from behind him. He turned and saw her spectral form standing there, a few decades younger than the body she’d just left and with a pleased grin on her face. “Looks like you're stuck with me after all.”

Ghost Writer

The tapping of keys turns into the smooth roll of ink on paper. The scratch of a well sharpened quill seems to go on forever until finally the staccato of metal against stone drowns it out. The words never stop though. They call out from across the millennia, demanding to be heard, to be known. There can be no denying their siren song. Those that listen are drawn to it, just like the countless others that came before them. Scratching, scrawling, scribbling, the words must be heeded, their story must be told.

On Wine Dark Seas

“Steady on!” cries the captain over the howling winds. The deckhands instinctively brace themselves against the stinging rain and when they look up, they see an enormous wave rolling towards them. They yell, as if the fierceness of their voices can somehow hold back the might of the ocean. The wave passes through them and a cheer goes up across the deck. Storms are much more fun when the threat of death no longer hangs overhead.
