The Tip Sheet >> Sept 8th
Hello All!
Here is your biweekly tip-sheet of creative writing tools and tricks.
Fellowship Alert —
American Academy in Berlin: Berlin Prize Fellowships DEADLINE: September 29th. Residential fellowships are given annually to fiction writers and creative nonfiction writers to spend an academic semester in residence at the Hans Arnhold Center at the American Academy in Berlin. Fellows receive a $5,000 monthly stipend, lodging, partial board, and round-trip airfare.
Inspiration I’ve been into —
The written word becomes visual in Ink Brick, a journal of literary comics and poetic mash-ups. This is one of my favorite genres, and browsing through these images always makes me want to write more. (Speaking of this genre, a side note: I have a new poetry-comic called Senator, up on The Rumpus this week!)
What I am reading —
I saw Camille Dungy read last night from both of her new books: Guidebook to Relative Strangers and Trophic Cascade. These books are GREAT, you guys. And her essay on writing is essential: Tell It Slant, on The Poetry Foundation.
Most popular post on Instagram —
My reaction to the awful news lately has been to focus on insular and analog projects; hence the make-shift pizza oven I built in my front yard this weekend for the neighborhood.
Quote on my mind —
“Make sure your worst enemy doesn't live between your two ears.” - Laird Hamilton
