Tips for Actors pt. 2

Being an actor with a fashion taste similar to mine can be a bitch sometimes. I won't just have to conceal tattoos for the Threepenny Opera, but also my fierce lime green, emerald and blue hair. I will never go back to my boring and sad af natural hair color, so I need to Hide the Punk. Here's a list of options that will hopefully help you, my fellow actors. - A wig (duh) It's the easiest way to hide your beloved unnatural hair. On Amazon you can find every hair color, lenght, and style. And they are super affordable too! The only downside to cheap wigs is that they can be a bit shiny and can reflect too much light on stage. Just spray some dry shampoo on it, let sit for ~10 minutes, then brush and style. You'll have the perfect natural-looking wig. You will also need TONS of bobbypins to keep your wig from flying around. And if you have massive hair, you'll probably need a net (they are usually sold with the wig, but you can also find them at the dollar store). - Spray-on dye L'Oreal sells a Spray-on dye that covers white and gray hairs or roots, but it also works for crazy-colored hair. It's called "Magic Retouch" and it's not that expensive (about 10€ for 75ml of product). It's available on Amazon, along with cheaper options (they don't perform just as well, but they do the job). After the show, you'll just have to wash you hair and the color will disappear. (Obviuosly, you'll have to use the darker colors.) - A headdress I will play Turnbridge Brothel's maitresse in the Threepenny Opera and it's set in the 20s. Turbans were very popular during the "Roaring Twenties" among women, so I will wear one of them. It's blue like my costume and it's very cute. It hides my hair and makes me look fierce af. If your character doesn't require a specific costume, just go with a hat, headscarf, turban or whatever you want. Just try to be as historically accurate as possibile and you'll be just fine. If you want to be a bit more extra (and your character allows it) cover your hair in feathers or something like that. Be creative, theatre is all about being weird. I hope that this will come in handy. Remember to have fun and give your best on stage. <3

Tips for Actors pt. 3

Ah, the theatre. An actor’s favourite place in the world, the most beautiful bulding ever. And the hottest one. Especially in spring and summer. Old theatres sometimes lack a basic appliance: air conditioning. And when 15/20 actors plus the techs and the directors stay in the same room at the same time, it feels like being trapped in Hell. It’s so hot it melts make up and ruins perfect hairdos, and the lonely window behind the curtain is not enough help. But the worst part, at least for the people that need to wear dresses or skirts, is THIGHS CHAFING. So, this time we’re discussing how to prevent your lovely legs to sweat like a pig in the oven and irritate.

- Collant shorts When I went to Lisbon last summer, I worked in a very formal place so I needed something to absorb the sweat between my thigs. Regular collants were a huge NOPE, in June temperatures in Portugal reach 38 degrees(celsius) and covering up my whole leg wasn’t on the plan. So I bought these collant shorts that are basically the top part of a regular collant (the fabric is a bit thicker and more elastic) and go down to a couple of inches above the knee. They hide pretty well under a skirt or a dress and they come in a variety of colors and sizes. There’s one for everyone. (They also support your belly and make your ass look amazing.) I paid ~3 euros for mine and they are still as new, despite being used more than a hundred times. Just put them on under your costume and you’ll be alright. You can also use cyclists’ shorts, they are pretty much the same. Maybe their fabric is even more absorbing.

- Thight boxers If you don’t want to add another layer of clothing with the shorts, you can put on some boxers thight enough to stay in place even if you dance. Remember that they need to reach at least your mid-thigh or else they’ll move up.

- Talc If you want your legs to be free from other unnecessary clothing, the oldest trick in the book against chafing and sweat in general is talc. Put it on the inner part of your thighs and it will work just fine.

- Stick deodorant Another thing you can put on your thighs is deodorant. It works fine, but you’ll need a very dry one, and not everyone can use them. They usually contain silicons or parabens, so if you’re allergic to these ingredients, avoid them at all costs. We want to prevent irritations, not worsen them.

- Body Glide stick Cyclists use it to help with the redness, and it’s sold everywhere online. It’s not very expensive and it is silicone-free, vegan and smells nicely.

If you get irritations, some good remedies are:

- Aloe vera gel. - Baby cream. - Zinc oxide paste (you can find the recipe online, the easiest one is mixing 2/3 cup of coconut oil, 1/8 cup of beeswax and ¾ tablespoon of zinc oxide powder. Some have glicerine in the, some use aloe… just surf the net a bit. They all work pretty fine. You can also just buy it online.)

You don't need expensive classes or a college degree to become an actor. In fact some of greatest actors never stepped into the class room.

What they did was gain as much experience as they can. Now the way did that may be different I give you some easy and free tips for you to get the experience you need to be the actor you want. Volunteer at a your local community theatre. That is were you are going to learn what it means to be an actor. At your community theatre you will meet other people that know more about the industry. Growing your network of artist is on of the pillars of becoming a successful actor.

The perils of fame: What are the best ways to handle rumors and gossip?

Image Source: forbes.com It's a given that actors and actresses' lives have become available to the public and they constantly have to put up model behavior to avoid gossip about them. They need to keep their reputations clean to maintain their marketability. Some celebrities live quietly, but others thrive in the spotlight and in gossip columns and blogs. Whether you as an actor will choose that kind of fame or the low-key one, here are some simple ways to handle rumors and gossip, which are standard features in all income levels in the industry: Speak up and be honest. Set the story straight. Rumors tend to be exaggerated and lost in context. To protect yourself from bad publicity, it's best to come forward with the truth. If the truth is that you've made a mistake, own up to it and apologize. People will appreciate your honesty and contrition.

If you are seen as a snobbish, unfriendly person, do something to change their view of you. Live morally. If you live without hurting anybody, people won't have any reason to bring you down. Although there will also be those who will be wary of your kindness and altruism, ignore them. They exist to bring you down but do not let them succeed in their malice.
