What’s your SSID?

The number of data records stolen or lost increase each day. I think it is important to know how to deal with some situations that happens online. I hope these posts can help someone to be safe in cyberspace. Sorry for any grammar or misspelling mistakes lol.

You know what it is "SSID"? This can be a strange term for most of the people, but it is something really common in your daily life. The "Service Set IDentifier" is the name you give to your Wireless/Wi-Fi network. Choosing a good name to your network can add more security for you online life. Your network name can facilize an attack. If I put my name on my Wireless/Wi-Fi people will know the owner of the network and with an easy password the access can be facilized. Alright, but I'm an ordinary person why someone would try to access my network? Here are some reasons:

Change your password, so the network would be just for the attacker.

Use your network to commit a crime. Doing some bad while connects in your Wireless/Wi-Fi could turn difficult to find the real author of the crime or even incriminate you and the others common users of the network.

Sniffing your data and get knowledge about what you do online. It is like you talking with someone but between you two is this other person listening everything. Imagine this conversation containing your bank password, or your social network information and even the content of an important email or the last massages you've sent to your friend, and one random person listening everything and taking notes to utilize that data.

To summarize I can use an example. When I saw this picture for the first time a few years I go I thought about it and I now I'm going to use as an example (everybody says thank you EXO for teaching me cybersecurity, lol)... I hope the responsible for the IT in their shows don't do this anymore, the boys and the staffs must be secure.

On the wall it is a paper, if you zoom in you can see the SSID (KT-NET-EXO) and the password (123456789).

In an unpleasant scenario (that I hope never happened or happens in the future, please) a sasaeng (a bad kind of kpop fan) finds on its device this network with the group name on it. Of course would call attention right? With a simple brute force app it could guess the password in seconds because it is too easy (is composed with just numbers) and with a few computer science knowledges could see everything the members and the staffs were doing online... Their privacy would be compromised and of course their security. Your network name and password are something important to consider if you want to be safe online...

Don't trust 100% in your cloud service

The number of data records stolen or lost increase each day. I think it is important to know how to deal with some situations that happens online. I hope these posts can help someone to be safe in cyberspace. Sorry for any grammar or misspelling mistakes lol. 

Cloud services aren't hundred percent secure, leaks have happened over the years and affected many users. Many celebrities were victims of leaked on iCloud in 2014 where many personal documents and photos where shared on social media. Recently Chinese cloud users were hacked too.

At same time you look for safety storing personal documents, photos and more on a cloud service you have to consider that any service could fail sometimes. If fails you can lost all you data or a part of it, or have your personal information shared with the world.

Documents, images, audio and others that aren't confidential, but you don't want to lose.

Use more than one cloud service. For my college project I had a backup everywhere I needed. I saved the document on Google Drive,  OneDrive, Dropbox and Gmail (attached on emails with my project partner and professor). If one of them fails, I could run to the other service and knows that my project was there safe and sound.

Documents, images, audio and others that are confidential (no one, except you, are authorized to see) and you don't want to lose.

Save locally. Yes, your own device will be safer than a someone else storage. Save in your desktop, laptop, USB drive, memory card or hard driver with a password or any other authentication method. If it's something critical is better be under your own protection.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month - Week 1: Basic Cybersecurity Essentials

With everyone using a device connected to the Internet is really important to know how to be safe. Here some tips to make your digital life more safe:

Use legitimate applications: make sure you are using trustworthily apps. There are some false applications that lookalike, the originals and downloading them could bring some problems. One of them could be: open a backdoor (turning you device vulnerable for a virus and malware).

Operation System updated: Always update your operation system and your applications. Some of these updates are for correcting vulnerabilities that developers may have found. Side note: try not updating in the same day that the update is released, some of them could bring more vulnerabilities, the first day is typically the test day.

Antivirus: use a antivirus. They may not be hundred percent efficiently sometimes, but is safer a door locked than just closed right? Always update the antivirus too, if a new virus or malware is found the antivirus database should be update to recognize them.

Use strong passwords: it is a cliché I know, but some people still not following this advice.A strong password has numbers, letters and symbols. A password like "123abc!@$" aren't strong!! You need using random sequels, and upper and lowercase. Side note: try putting a phrase that you like (but no one knows you like) this way your password will be bigger more difficult to break. Something like "ILoveSunflowers" plus some numbers and symbols could create a  strong password.

Never use a public WiFi to access any personal account - Personal account could be your bank account, your account from a e-commerce website or even a social media account. When you connect to a public WiFi all information from your device isn't protected with encryption. So anyone with more computer science knowledge (popular know as hackers) can access and "see" all your person information. It is like you talking with someone but between you two is this other person listening everything. Imagine this conversation containing your bank password, or your social network information and even the content of an important email, and one random person listening everything and taking notes to utilize that data. Be careful.

I was thinking about to make a post like this for some weeks. The number of data records stolen or lost increase each day. I think it is important to know how to deal with some situations that happens online. I'm planning to post a tip every week, but I'm not sure yet. I hope these posts can help someone to be safe in cyberspace. Sorry for any grammar or misspelling mistakes lol.

Always verify the "to field" when you receive an email: Most of the phishing attacks don't have a specific target. If you receive a email from a company or a bank verifies the "to field", the email was sent directly to you or for many other people? When a company sends an email, specially a bank, they usually send a personal email, just your email and your name is mentioned. Things like: "Dear Customer","Client" or others terms that gives an idea that the email wasn't written just for you it is suspicious. Be careful.
