I have been reading a lot more again, which has actually been bolstered by a bit of competitive spirit with my partner (we decided that whoever reads the most books by January wins, and the other has to buy them a book as a prize.) But I’m finding it so hard to determine what I want to read next, and weirdly even harder to find recommendations…

I have a list of books that friends have personally recommended to me (mostly waiting on my public library to have them on this side of the county) but beyond that… There are always the Librarian Recommendations, but those are presented without context or really any reason why one would like it. I don’t want to read books because someone once liked it, I want people to tell me what they liked about it!

None of my immediate circles do formal or informal book reviews. I can’t just pick a random goodreads reviewer to trust. Eek!

I had an awesome year sorting trash, dressing up in weird little outfits, staying in as much as possible, and giving kittens a kiss on their silly noggins. Not a bad way to spend the year, all in all.

My mom is cleaning out her shed, and excitedly came to find me because there was an unopened package addressed to me, from my Grandma and Grandpa, that neither of us could remember and could have been from any year. We’re both getting excited, thinking it’s gonna be jewelry or a book or like. an heirloom silver hand mirror or some shit… I notice the paper is a bit faded, who knows how old it is…

Rip open the paper and… ah. From circa 1998, the My Music Maker Keyboard. If only I had had this in 1998, and perhaps today I’d be making that philharmonic cheddar.

I’m rereading the fantasy series that teenage me adored, and being very much amused by how much it’s working on me all over again. It’s a shame it’s a series that nobody basically ever anywhere has read, but that’s okay. It’s a sort of fictional private island getaway.

One of the funniest parts is realizing what teenage me didn’t realize about the initial love interest: this fantasy hero guy is 100% the blueprint for not only the love interest hero guy of my own novel but also is basically a dead ringer for my current boyfriend (who we had remarked on has uncanny similarities to the character from my novel, who was invented long before I met my bf.) It’s pretty wild to go back to a series I had nearly forgotten about and find that I love it even more now than I did then!

I’m also doing some reading of The Rise of The Dragon. GRRM really is a bonkers guy. It’s all brilliant, of course. It makes me wish I had an entire room to paper the walls with plans for my own novel. I can’t imagine how he keeps track of any of it (or rather, I can’t imagine what it would be like to live a life where it actually behooves you to invest in your invented world that way! Cause I can see that the way he keeps track of all these characters is to find ways to give each of them a “hook” where he has dug into who they are and what their story is…)

Both series are renewing my appreciation for stories with lots and lots of viewpoint characters. Much to think about.

tmi incoming: got an iud put in today. was sort of like the pain of a small tattoo collapsed into 3 minutes. sweated like a pig as soon as the doc started poking around in there. what does pain have to do with sweating? why do i sweat under painful circumstances?

Library haul today. Mostly for entertainment’s sake than for research, but nonfiction is pissing me off less than fiction has been lately. I just finished A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms and am out of asoiaf to read (or watch) and I keep picking up other random fiction and being sort of let down by it not being on the same level as asoiaf 🤷🏻‍♀️ But also hoping maybe if I read enough about history and mythology it’ll motivate me to get some worldbuilding work done 🤞🏼
