Hello To All! My name is Alexis Rodgers! I am a 22-year old first year teacher. I will be teaching English Language Arts to 100 amazing sixth graders in a Title 1 School. I have always wanted to be a teacher and I am so excited to start my new career. However before I can even enter the classroom I have fallen on hard times. My mom was in a car accident and my own car is breaking down. I have a job working at a fast food restaurant for the summer but all of my bills are going to helping my family. I am asking for help from the global community to help me provide supplies for my classroom and students. All the proceeds from this fundraiser will go back into the classroom. I am so excited for this new journey but I’m afraid I won’t have the supplies to even start it successfully. Even $5 will help a child get paper and pencils. Me: Okay?

Student N: Girls can't have girlfriends!

Me: Girls can have girlfriends.

Student N: ... oh. *wanders off*

Student A: Student B just called me a punk and that's a swear word!

Me: Well that's not a swear word, but it wasn't a kind thing for him to say. *calls student B over*

Me: Student B I heard you called Studnet A a punk. Student A can you tell him how that made you feel?

Student A: Yeah it made me feel mad. I didn't like that you called me that.

Me: Student B do you understand that you hurt Student A's feelings?

Student B: Yeah. I was hurtful.

Me: What do you think you could do or say that would be helpful?

Student B: I could maybe say sorry?

Me: That does sound helpful, why don't you try that out?

Student B: I'm sorry I called you names, Student A.

Student A: That's alright man, but please don't call me punk again.

Student B: Ok!

Last day of after school with the students. I’M SO SAD. They and another teacher made me THE SWEETEST book of cards. It’s so darling and thoughtfuI. I will miss the students SO MUCH. It was amazing to be their teacher and see how far they’ve come in just a few months. And for more than half of them to see their journey over 1-2 years! They’re so tall now! They solve their own problems. They help the younger students and have grown into role models. I’m definiately going to visit when I can during student teaching. Bittersweet for sure.

Student K: Why don't you get a snack? *points at me*

Me: Well, I'm an adult and I need to get my own snack.

Student K: Well THAT'S no fair! You should get one! It's delicious!

Me: Right now my job is to make sure everyone in Science Club is safe and eating their snack.

Student K: That ain't right that you don't get to eat. Student A is gone you eat his snack!

Me: That's very kind of you. I promise I ate a snack earlier. You just enjoy yours.

Student K: I'm not 'bout to tell you what to do, but you should eat snack.

Sometimes I hear “how can you work with THOSE kids?” because I work in a school with high poverty and many students struggle in more ways than one. There are a lot of behaviors. But more often than not these students really impress me.

There’s one boy in the after school class that has a tough life, even compared some of the other students. He often gets scared at transitions and cries. He gets frustrated easily when it comes to math/reading and cries. He misses his dad a lot and cries. 

The other students notice, but are very kind and they often try to cheer him up. Which, always warms my heart. They pat him on the back, or offer him to cut in front of them etc. He still struggles a bit to find playmates on the playground, but we’ve been working on that and today he found someone to play with him without my help. 

The last few afternoon meetings when it’s question and comment time students will call on him. When it was his turn to share, and then he was calling on students that had questions or comments for him about half the class had their hands up. The expectation would be that these kids would bully and ignore him, but instead they work twice as hard to include him. 

Today I finally had to sit him down for his math assessment. He started to cry, but I gave him lots of praise. One of the students came up to me to ask a questions and saw the student working on math. And he said “Good job “name” you are great at math bro”. Then they high-fived. It was SO sweet.

Student G: *dances in the middle of the playground*

Me: Whoa cool dance moves G! Where did you learn to dance?

Student G: I learned from the streets! *poses with crossed arms*
