Titmuss Regained 1991🔥

It took me years to get round to the sequels to John Mortimer’s Paradise Postponed, despite it being one my favourite books from my youth. Titmuss Regained was excellent and then this bought us into the era of New Labour and the time when socialism was a dirty word for Labour in the UK, as a new breed of politicians came to power on a sea of promises and compromises. Beautifully done. An underrated and much missed author.

Bit of a cheat this one. I half read it late last year and failed to close. It off. Not sure why. Something better came along. But actually it’s the second volume of a trilogy and I haven’t read the first volume for about a decade and I have never read the third volume. So here I basically read the second half of the middle section of a three part story. Good stuff and anchored in some knowledge, but mildly frustrating. It reminded me about the pleasures of Paradise Postponed and made me look forward to The Sound of Trumpets. So now it is done I may go back to the beginning and read right through. It’s a state of the nation piece. Was rather a good TV series back in the day. Britain from the 60s to new Labour through a socialist prism. This was not a patch on the rather epic events of the first volume but the three together will yield a vast tapestry of English life.

When I read the question, Ken and Malcolm all dressed up are what immediately came to mind so I hope they are the kind of thing you’re looking for.

Ken Cracken from Titmuss Regained and his slicked back hair at the opera is to my mind probably the closest Peter has ever come to looking like a film Bond, but Malcolm -- who does look pretty damn dapper* in his dinner jacket (the only correct thing John Duggan has ever said) -- gets the James Bond name check and the strut down the corridor.

(Besides looking very dapper he also looks right into the camera.) 

And obviously it would be very wrong indeed for me to include Pilfrey just because he *thinks* he’s James Bond, but really really isn’t.

Finally, just for the sake of completion, here’s one of Mike Francis in Magicians looking pretty spiffy with his black tie and floofy hair; but who isn’t so much a super-spy as what Malcolm would be if he had a floor show in Vegas (or the Batley Variety Club).

Dillon, Ken, and Randall may have vastly different accents, personalities, and hair colors, but they sure do sure have at least one thing in common.
