I understand why they had Tom go directly to London, obviously the timeline had to be condensed and that makes sense as an easy way to do it, but also it was truly PEAK Tom behavior when he set out for Bristol to become a sailor, only to get completely turned around and run into a regiment of soldiers marching north to put down the Jacobite rebellion, wherein he volunteered to enlist partially by accident, and then was immediately hit on the head with a bottle and left behind.
