His treatment was still, or even more, hostile. Kay went silent; the talkative, energetic, and vibrant Kay was reduced to nothing but a silent mess. He didn’t feel welcome, but that was expected. Even though he knew the place well, he felt like a foreigner, an intruder, and his chest felt heavy and tight.
Kay stepped inside, removing his facemask and pulling down the hood of his sweatshirt. He didn’t know what to do, where to sit, or how to stand. The only way he could control his uneasiness was to take a deep, grounding breath and watch the other man enter as well.
"I called you," he began. "I also sent you a text," he added. "You didn’t respond, so I assumed you were busy." Lies. He didn’t assume anything; he knew exactly what happened. Daphne didn’t answer his calls or respond to his texts on purpose because it had become a recurring issue, but he still lied. "I wanted to know if it was okay to visit you since I was abroad and..." He paused. "Well, I also told you I was going to be on a business trip, but I think you missed that message too," he said with a stupid, oblivious smile. Another lie, trying to excuse the other’s behavior as if it weren’t obvious, but it made it a little less hurtful. "Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to come," he muttered. "You didn’t answer for a reason, and now I’m here being a nuisance when you must be tired. I..." he said, making long pauses in the middle of his sentence and gesturing toward the front door to imply he could leave if the other wanted him to. Kay completely dismissed his own tiredness; he had been asleep in the hallway just moments ago, but he still put Daphne first.
