The breakdown vs recovery
Me *thinking about Wrath*: and Emilia wanted to put a CHEAP SHIRT on him?!?!?
Date Night I
I got so many requests in my inbox for a version of “Date Night” set in The Keeping of Words universe. There were so many suggestions for how that could look, but I’m really happy with this version, so I hope those of you who like TKOW enjoy it! Part 2 coming very soon!
Summary: Three years after leaving the BAU, Dr. Spencer Reid has given up chasing monsters to be a part-time professor and a full-time dad. It’s all domestic bliss - until Cat Adams turns up at the BAU.
Warnings: mentions of violence, kidnapping, references to past kidnapping and assault
.......................................
“Now, it’s rare for serial killers to go that long between murders, but years passed between the BTK attacks. How did Rader manage to go that long between murders?”
Reid’s students stared at him expectantly, a few flipping back through their notes. A girl in Georgetown hoodie raised her hand. “Well it seems like he stayed connected to what he did in like, other ways? He wrote up detailed plans for each attack so maybe he focused on that.”
“Yeah,” added a boy with round glasses and a sticker-covered laptop. “And he wrote to the police a lot with information and puzzles, so that could have given him the feeling of power he needed.”
“Good, good,” Reid said. “Those are both great points. Rader did all of that and more. The stalking, the planning, the communication with the media is all part of what we c-” His train of thought was interrupted by the ringing of his phone. He gave it the briefest of glances – just Emily, likely asking for an obscure fact he could provide after the lecture – before pocketing it once more and continuing. “Sorry. Uh, so all of his behavior is what we call sublimating. Psychologically speaking, it’s the process of diverting one’s impulses or desires into a more socially acceptable activity. Forensically, it’s how unsubs curb their urges during a cooling-off period. In this case we see that…” His phone began to ring again. The name on the screen was the same.
“I’m so sorry,” he said again. He made it a point not to use his phone in front of his students and to give them the same respect he asked of them while in his class. He quickly sent Prentiss a text. In lecture – call in 30? “As I was saying, in this case it’s clear that–” Before he could even return the phone to his pocket it rang again.
A sudden chill came over him. This wasn’t just about a consult. “I – uh, sorry,” he stammered. His students glanced between themselves. It wasn’t like their hyper-focused, luddite professor to take a call in the middle of lecture. Reid turned away from them as he raised the phone to his ear. “What is it?” he asked.
“Reid, I’m so sorry. We need you to come in immediately. Luke’s out front to bring you to Quantico. We have a kidnapping case and there’s one demand – that we release Cat Adams within 24 hours.” The name made every muscle in his body tense. An automatic trauma response.
Date Night II
Here’s the second part to a TKOW-verse “Date Night”!
Part I | The Keeping of Words
Summary: Three years after leaving the BAU, Dr. Spencer Reid has given up chasing monsters to be a part-time professor and a full-time dad. It’s all domestic bliss - until Cat Adams turns up at the BAU.
Warnings: discussions of miscarriage, abuse
........
And so he took Cat to a roller rink. It wasn’t ice skating, but it was still skating. Walking inside with her like this was all just a fun game. Her fantasy come to life. She made him hold her hand. She kept calling him Spencie and he tried not to cringe, not to snap at the sound of it. It wasn’t a term of endearment. It wasn’t even close to the way it felt to hear Bianca say his name, to whisper my love as she ran her hands through his hair, or the way it sounded when Eliza Lou shouted daddy with the biggest smile on her face. No, any form of his name on Cat Adams’ lips made his skin crawl.
He kept trying to get Cat to slip up, but she refused to answer his questions. “I don’t want to talk about that,” she said after he asked about her baby.
“I didn’t want to talk about it,” he said. “I was actually just trying to see if I could use it against you.”
Cat spun around, skating closer. “Oh, really? What about um… sex?” She wrapped her arms around his neck and pressed her body against his. He gritted his teeth as he placed his hands on her waist to steady himself. Her touch felt like burning, in all the worst ways. As she gazed up at him, he had to force himself not to look away. “Why don’t you use that against me?”
Night Changes | 2K Celebration
As part of my 2K follower celebration, if you send me a character or pairing and a song, I’ll write a ficlet (roughly 1000 words) based on it. For every song requested, I’ll also do a bonus ficlet so you’ll get double the stories! Requested: Bianca and Reid from The Keeping of Words & “Night Changes” by One Direction. ---
“Garcia is throwing a big party tonight,” he says as they stroll past the Reflecting Pool. “For the summer solstice. It’s a little last minute since we weren’t sure whether we would have a case, but the whole team will be there, plus a few of her other friends.”
“It sounds wonderful,” Bianca says. “I didn’t know people threw solstice parties.”
“Well, Garcia has a celebration for everything,” Reid laughs. “Although celebrations for the longest day of the year have been in place for centuries. In Europe, bonfires, flowers, and festivals mark the Midsummer. In China, it’s the day of the Dragon Boat Festival, and Ireland it’s designated as the Day of Private Reflection. And in fact, for the Southern hemisphere, the summer solstice typically coincides with Christmas celebrations. But I’m getting off topic,” he says. He doesn’t want to lecture her on the history of solstice festivities. He wants to take another step towards that invisible line they’ve been toeing for weeks since she fell asleep on his couch and he went to talk to Hotch. “Actually, Garcia told us all we should bring a plus one and I was kind of hoping that maybe you’d want to come with me?”
Bianca stops walking. He immediately backtracks. “If you’re not busy, of course! I mean, she always says that and usually I would just go by myself but I was thinking that it would be more if you were there. Everything’s better when you’re around. But of course I know it’s short notice and you might have plans already so you don’t have to come if you don’t want to. But if you want to come, I would be happy to drive.”
It used to be so easy, moments like this. They went everywhere together. By her side was where he felt most at home. After leaving, after Maeve, after everything changed, he’s still finding his way back to the meaning of that word. But this, he supposes, is a good place to start. Testing the waters. Inviting her to go somewhere with him, with his friends who were her friends once, too.
To his relief, she smiles. “I’d like that.” He picks her up at eight. She stands outside her building in a red wrap dress that flutters in the warm breeze the way his heart does when she smiles at him. She slides into the passenger seat and for a moment it’s like no time has passed and neither of their hearts have ever been broken.
Omg you made me so happy with that story of Eliza, now I know this is a stretch but can we get a update on Halloween where you left off with them going trick or treating with everyone🥺🙈 ?
Ask and you shall receive, anon! I really never get tired of writing Spencer and Bianca, and I really didn’t give myself the space to explore what their lives as parents would look like so it was fun to to take that a little further with this one! Here’s just some pure domestic Halloween fluff.
----
They arrived at JJ’s house just as the sun was beginning to paint the autumn sky golden. Before the door had even opened, they could hear Henry shout, “Mom! They’re here!” Seconds later it swung open, and Henry, dressed in red, white, and blue, greeted them with a grin. “Hi Uncle Spence! Hi Aunt Bianca!” He gave each of them a quick hug. “Wow, you brought a tiger!”
“It’s me!” Eliza said, giggling. Henry pretended to be shocked as she threw her arms around them.
“Let me guess… Captain America, right?” Spencer asked as they stepped inside.
“Yeah, he’s my favorite superhero!” Henry’s excitement faltered for a moment and he straightened up a little taller. “I mean, I know I’m kind of old to go trick-or-treating, but I promised Michael I’d come.”
“Henry, if I have taught you anything you should know by now that you’re never too old for Halloween,” Spencer replied.
His words brought a smile back to Henry’s face and he said, “Wait till you see my shield! I painted it all by myself!”
The inside of the LaMontagne-Jareau househould was already bustling. JJ, dressed as Black Widow, was finishing Michael’s Hulk-green face paint. Hotch and Jack had moved back to the DC area two years earlier, and Garcia was excitedly talking to Jack and his girlfriend Mabel. The two teens had donned the costumes of Ben Solo and Rey from Star Wars, while the BAU’s former tech wizard wore a bright pink dress and golden crown as Princess Peach. Hotch and Beth, masquerading as Han Solo and Princess Leia, were being regaled by one of Rossi’s stories while Krystall laughed. Rossi’s suit and tie didn’t quite make sense as a costume until Bianca realized that Krystall’s white dress and curled hair made her Marilyn Monroe, and Rossi must have been JFK.
“It’s about time you showed up Pretty Boy!” Morgan quickly cut through the room to make his way to them, ruffling Spencer’s hair. “And my favorite little lady,” he said, embracing Bianca. Then squatting down to Eliza’s height, “And littlest lady, too, Miss Eliza Lou!”
Can we get like a mini story of Reid and Bianca with Elizabeth 🥺🥺🥺
You’re in luck anon! I’d already written up a little drabble like this for a companion piece to The Keeping of Words that I work on here and there. So here you go - a little slice of domestic bliss for the Reid family.
---
The far edge of their backyard slopes downward to meet a creek, and it’s on that gentle hill that Reid lies, his daughter in his lap, resting her head against his chest.
“What’s that one’s name?” she asks, pointing up at the sky. At three years old, Eliza is becoming increasingly curious about the world around her, and he is always happy to oblige.
“That’s a cirrus cloud,” he tells her, one arm wrapped around her to keep her securely in place. “They look like feathers, don’t they?”
“Yeah,” she says. Then, pointing again, “What about that one?”
“It’s called a cumulus cloud. They’re puffy, like cotton balls.”
“They’re fluffy!” she decides with glee.
He can’t help but laugh, caught up in her joy. “Yes, they’re the fluffiest clouds.” The pair are so focused on the patterns of clouds in the sky that neither has heard the car pull into the driveway or the woman standing in a pale blue sundress mere feet away, watching them with a wistful smile.
for 2000 followers could we get a fanfic of bianca and reid with everyone at thanksgiving at their house with their kids
I’m still working on all the wonderful song requests you all have sent me, but here’s a little Thanksgiving ficlet for you! -----
There is much to be thankful for this year. It’s the first year she knows Spencer will be home for every holiday, and she can’t tell which of them is more excited about it. He’d gone above and beyond for Halloween with multiple carved pumpkins, full-sized candy bars to hand out to trick-or-treaters, and a handmade dalmatian costume for Eliza (the two of them had dressed as Roger and Anita to complete the 101 Dalmatians theme). For Thanksgiving, they’d decided to host a dinner at their house. Over the last few years the holiday has looked different for them each time. One year it was spent at Rossi’s mansion with all of the BAU, and another year had been passed with Spencer chasing a spree killer through Wyoming while she crammed for her finals in the Law Library. This year, they open their home to any of their friends who don’t have a place to go yet. Rossi, Tara, Luke, and Garcia promise to make an appearance. Ivy and Jess agree to join, as does Tanvi. And much to Bianca’s delight, Eva and her family decide to make a trip across the ocean to spend the American holiday with them. All her worlds are colliding in a way she hasn’t experienced since their wedding day.
Eva, Lorenzo, and their son Marco stay in the guest room of their house, and she’s so happy to have her best friend by her side once more, if only for a few days. Despite all the distance between them, every time they’re together, it feels like nothing has changed. Eva remains her closest confidante, and her dry wit keeps Spencer constantly on his toes, much to her amusement. On Thanksgiving Day, Eva and Lorenzo serve as her sous chefs in the kitchen, while Spencer is relegated to rearranging the living room and keeping an eye on the kids. When everything is simmering on the stove as it should, she stands in the doorway and watches him as he plays with the two babies, changing between animated expressions to keep them giggling. He glances up to catch her there staring at him, and a sheepish grin spreads across his face. She can’t help but smile too, feeling so lucky to love someone who gives love so freely, who is so overjoyed to spend time with kids, who will happily put up with Eva’s teasing and tough love to see her happy.
