Description: According to urban legend, Hiwassee Creek near Murphy, North Carolina is said to be home of a massive snake, or sometimes described as a massive leech. Though no modern sightings have been recorded, the monster was spoken about by Cherokee tribesmen in the 19th century.
The tlanusi is a creature from Cherokee folklore, believed to live in the Hiwassee River in Murphy, North Carolina. It is said to be a huge leech, the size of a house, which can command the water and drag people down to its home on the riverbed, where it will devour them.
The site where the tlanusi is purported to live is known as "Tlanusi-yi," which literally translates as "the leech place."
