some more wild shit about emperor Yang of Sui, composer of slightly unsettling poetry
imagine being the EMPEROR and getting worried that your nephew-in-law is the one prophesied to overthrow you and, what, suicide-baiting said nephew? and it doesn't even work???
By 615, there had been rumors throughout Sui territory that the next emperor would be named Li. Emperor Yang therefore particularly became suspicious of Li Hun's nephew Li Min (李敏) [...] because Li Min's nickname was "Hong'er" (洪兒), meaning "son of a flood," and Emperor Wen had long ago dreamed that a flood would overflow the capital. Emperor Yang therefore tried to hint to Li Min that he should commit suicide, but Li Min did not.

going on a bit of a rabbit hole with this poorly-sourced Wang Anshi poem that crossed my dash this morning
i've figured out the translator but the translator doesn't provide the original Chinese title for cross-referencing
nor did he indicate (at least in the excerpted release) that his translation was extracts from a cycle of 5 or 6 linked poems under the same title!!
been really enjoying these two books on Wang Anshi:
Pease, Jonathan. His Stubbornship: Prime Minister Wang Anshi (1021--1086), Reformer and Poet. Brill, 2021. https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004469259
Pease, Jonathan. “From the Wellsweep to the Shallow Skiff: life and poetry of Wang Anshi (1021--1086).” 1986. University of Washington, PhD dissertation. https://digital.lib.washington.edu/researchworks/items/479314df-affc-4320-8b29-36abac8c5328/full
his writing style as a biographer is energetic and clear, and he's astoundingly good at poetry analysis. his translations are idiosyncratic but fun -- without having read more of Wang Anshi in the original, i can't say more than that either way
i dont JUST have severance miis
hawkmoth is there

and here's the full text of "Various Chants" 杂咏六首 by Wang Anshi 王安石
