FTH 2026 Supported Org: Advocates for Trans Equality

Since last January, the administration has rolled out a slew of executive orders affecting the rights, health, and dignity of transgender and gender expansive people. This is only part of a wave of right wing anti-trans sentiment that has given rise to numerous hateful actions over the past several years.

A4TE was formed when The National Center for Trans Equality merged with the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, which FTH has supported in years past. A4TE builds on their successes to boldly imagine a world where trans people live their lives joyfully and without barriers.

A4TE's programs encompass a range of approaches, from helping individuals secure name changes to working to fight anti-trans policies at all levels of government. Their team of policy experts, litigators, and community organizers work to ensure trans voices are not only heard, but embraced in rooms where they've long been ignored. As a trans-led nonprofit, they also help the trans community navigate the realities of law and policy through vital tools, knowledge, and services.

Major trans rights groups have united to take down anti-trans movement

Two of the most influential trans rights groups in the US have teamed up and form a single organisation to advocate for trans equality.

The Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund filed a federal lawsuit against Wal-Mart for workplace discrimination.

According to the suit, Charlene Bost worked at a Sam’s Club store in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Sam’s Club is a subsidiary of Wal-Mart. At her job as a Member Service Supervisor, she endured a hostile work environment and relatiation. Bost joined the company in 2011 and they fired her in 2015.

Following her transition, fellow employees and bosses began discriminating against Bost. Employees repeatedly called her the wrong name and used the wrong pronouns.

According to TLDEF, this treatment violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and, finally, the North Carolina Equal Employment Practices Act. The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found evidence of this discrimination in an investigation.

FTH 2023 Supported Organization: Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund

Although the legal and social landscape for trans people is better than it was ten or even five years ago, trans people still face discrimination, and in some cases even violence, in many dimensions of life. Trans people are far more likely to be confronted with unjust eviction, denial of medical treatment and employment discrimination. Trans people of color are particularly vulnerable, and are among the most frequent targets of violent hate crimes.

The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund’s mission is to end discrimination and achieve equality for transgender people, particularly those in our most vulnerable communities. Transgender people have been subject to pervasive discrimination that has kept them, with rare exceptions, hidden from public view.

TLDEF’s strategies include path-breaking trans rights cases and “friend of the court” briefs regarding the key issues of employment, health care, education and public accommodations. They seek to coordinate with traditional civil rights organizations and other LGBT civil rights organizations. They also provide public education on transgender rights.  

In addition, TLDEF’s Name Change Project provides pro bono legal name change services to community members through partnerships with some of nation’s premier law firms and corporate law departments.
