The thing about Riley in terms of Ellie and her own trust issues and character is that everything that Is Ellie would never have been possible without Riley.

Riley was the first person that Ellie loved, her first crush, her roommate, her best friend. She was also the first person to leave without saying anything, not even telling Ellie anything about it. Riley unintentionally gave her that bit of guilt and trauma that she was so easy to be left behind (which I think is a big reason the dlc/episode is titled in such a way, to symbolize not only Ellie's feelings and emotions, but also her first home that she can never go back to, of Many what ifs that could have happened if that night, or any other night before or after that, had went differently). Riley is also the person that matters to also (unintentionally) put it into her head that she doesn't belong anywhere, that she wouldn't know what it was like to have someone love her like Riley's parents had unconditionally loved her.

Joel is the first person to treat her in such a way without thought. Just within hours of meeting each other, he kills someone for her, someone that he knew and was friends with, because he was going to kill her, and he feels the same fear and anger he felt when Sarah had also been shot so carelessly by someone unwilling to listen. He drags her along if he has to to keep her alive, does what he can to make sure she's safe and warm and fed.

So, naturally, when the next person who she comes to trust again that isn't dead says he wants to leave her? Well, originally, she runs. But, here, she stays, but the reactions are the same; He's the first person to treat her like a kid, to protect her by practically ripping people apart for trying to hurt her, and he's the first person to not leave. That means everything to Ellie, it's everything she's ever wanted, to not be alone, or alone with someone she can't feel safe with. Of course she's going to be angry and upset!

But all of this makes Maria's talk with Ellie that much...More. The only people that can actually harm you aren't the raiders or soldiers that want to kill you (or Worse), but the people that you trust.

no but also. I really love how they handled Joel and Tess in the show thus far, the characterisation of both has been incredible and I hope we get more flashbacks of Tess bc I remember losing her so early in the game was crushing and it'd be cool if we got more of her even tho she's gone :") Seeing her befriend Frank was probably the sweetest thing i've ever seen and it added so much to those characters,, I think it'd be cool if over time as Joel and Ellie get closer and more comfortable we get to see them open up to each other more and talk about Tess and Riley,,

i can’t get over the progression of teasers and trailers that we’ve gotten for part ii because the first one was like “ellie’s back! she’s older! she’s mad! she plays the guitar now! joel might be... a ghost?! :)!” and the next one was like “here’s a brutal torture scene with graphic violence and dark cinematography. who are these people? we don’t know. is this even in the same game? there’s a car on fire.” and then it went straight back to “ellie’s back! she’s older! joel might b

the intro we get of ellie where she fucking leaps at joel to protect marlene we get such a good insight to her character like yes she’s a little girl but she won’t let her friends/guardians be injured

“i thought people in your time had plenty of food.” / “we did, some just chose not to eat it.” / “pft. that’s stupid.”

both of the parts where joel is like “is it everything you hoped for?” and ellie says “you can’t deny that view” and the prominent mood shifts between those two scenes and the importance of them both as they show the development of the relationship between joel and ellie

the scene where joel is talking to ellie and he rubs his watch as he does so, symbolising that he is now seeing ellie as his daughter, as his biological daughter bought him the watch 

“i struggled for a long time with surviving, and no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for. now i know it ain’t easy but --” / “swear to me.”

We all talk about how Ellie and Sam's conversation was held, how it's the Epitome of childhood innocence and belief, but I haven't seen anyone talk about how Joel talked to Henry at the end.

After Henry shot Sam, then had the idea of just What he had done, Joel turns to him, and he talks to him. He talks to him, assures him, and tries to convince him to hand over the gun, while Henry is having a panic attack. Then, when Henry points the gun to his head, he yells at him not to.

All of this happens, in this way, because Joel Knows. Joel Knows what it's like, to raise a kid the best that you can in less than well circumstances, and how it feels to try your best to keep them alive, to carry them as far as you can, then still fail. Joel Knows what Henry is going through, what he's thinking, because it's clear it's what he thought when he had his own world crash down on him nearly three times and have to push forward because it's just what you do, the only thing you can.

sometimes brion says things and i can just. hear the joel just straining to not break out of troy’s voice. like idk why but the raw rage that just constantly radiates off of the seventeen year old that looks like a thirty year old just screams angry apocalypse dad and it screams it loud and clear

What are some things you wish had / do happen in tlou / tlou 2 ??? :0

thing i wish happened in the last of us:

- i wanted to get like. some background on ellie. i know we got the riley story in left behind but that was. riley’s story. and dont COME for me about american dreams that was STILL more about riley than it was ellie

- i wanted to see joel really like. mourn. he’s kept all of his grief inside for so long and i know that he’s very stoic and also it would be Angry Sadness but i wanted to see that so ellie would learn that her grief isnt something to be ashamed of 

- MORE FRICKING PEACEFUL MOMENTS GEEZ LOUISE 

things i want to happen in tlou 2:

- any quiet, soft ellie and joel moment. something familial and peaceful and warm and pleasant, something that really shows their bond and their development.

- ellie embracing that her anger isn’t her fault and realising how much she’s been through because all she’s done is accept her life without realising how terrifying her whole entire life has been

- joel resting but in an alive way

- the fireflies fucking off

- tommy’s town prospering, people being happy and a good, strong community, no needless character death for the sake of sadness/angsty moments/shock value

- joel and ellie coming clean with each other (ESPECIALLY JOEL) and them just . working it out. she’d understand why he lied if he just talked to her about it and removed that doubt from her mind
