I just finished reading the official early screenplay of the tlw movie and oh my GOD am I gonna yap about it. Specificly about Stebbins. You guys we were ROBBED, screenplay stebbins is genuently so much more accurate to the book than actual movie Stebbins. He's more weird and cryptic and that was my main problem in the movie. That he wasn't freaky enough. The only real difference is that one, he gets sick, and two, he's more muscular. And those are changes I can live with, especially Stebbins getting sick.
Because what i also loved in the screenplay is just how utterly miserable he was. He was constantly sneezing and coughing and shivering like an abandoned stray cat. Would've loved to see more of that in the movie honestly. He was such a snotty mess and kept being like "Yeah it's just a cold", Billy you just threw up from coughing too hard.
His death was also better in the screenplay honestly. I know that in the actual movie he was like "I wanna die with my head held high" but book Stebbins death wasn't like that either. In the book he just fell down and died from exhaustion. And while I don't really mind movie Stebbins death, I prefer the og version. He was supposed to kinda just fall down because his body wasn't working with him anymore. And then he tried to get up but when he saw that the major was smiling at him he kinda just gave up. Sat up just enough to look at the soldiers and die with some dignity as he told them to bring it on. I feel like the major finally aknowlaging him by smiling really helped him accept that he wouldn't win and I love that a lot.
I mourn the weird, feverish screenplay stebbins that told Ray and Pete he was talking to them because he was lonely and sick. I miss him and the jelly sandwiches. I felt like I was actually seeing the Version of him that i fell inlove with when I was reading it. Rip concept stebbins, you would've loved having purple pants and a green sweater.
Stebbins, dying of pneumonia: I. must. tell. them. this. fun. fact. 😠😠
*coughs so hard he vomits*
Damn. They really just cut every single gay line, didn't they??
Another death that they toned down in the movie. Jesus. The Major smiling at him?? Fuck man.
This is closer to the book though, so I see the path that was taken from book to screen.
My main takeaway from the script: Get my man Stebbins an autism diagnosis. Like right the fuck now.
(Olson convo from the movie)
God they had so much more of Stebbins from the book in here! I miss him 😔
Cool cool cool cool cool cool.
And they cut this line.
Kill me.
