The Mandela Catalogue Catified: more Thatcher Davis concepts

Here I am again with more Thatcher Davis-as-a-cat concepts

I realize the previous one was getting to be quite old so here’s some sketches to see generally where his design is at now

Starting with the most recent Iteration then a little W.I.P chart of him through out the series

DWW he’ll get more scruffy and messy looking, I just plan to draw places with a lot of line mileage/ where there’d be a lot of visible fur tufts when I’m doing the line art, as I find it personally easier that way

anyways in his most recent iteration I mostly adjusted his cheek fur and his ears. I wanted his cheek fur to look more like weeping Willow leaves (he has so many symbolic plants and birds we gave him omfg) and his ears were adjusted just to feel more like him, I guess.

Also gave him some tide up fur to not only match more with my human design but, mostly to show his mental state. Each year it gets harder and harder for him to take good care of his fur, let alone cut it, but he has A LOT of fur so to somewhat manage it he puts some of it in a half assed pony tail, especially since it’s in a harder to reach spot and therefore harder to maintain in a way for it to look somewhat nice.

here’s a look at this doodle again as its still very applicable for his pallet design (though I DO need to make his colors more dull and desaturated)

Alright SUPER sorry if I sent these before I have SHIT memory

but here are some concepts I did for Adam quite a bit ago! Not finalized but I think he mostly needs his small adjustments before he’s ready for his references to be made! At least for his base design - he needs some concepts for his dumb sweater and then I’ll probably make some stuff for him after Catalyst

probably after I make some other concepts- these are made for a comic/novel project so I need to do some AU type concepts as well

Put a LOT of thought into these so PLEASE feel free to ask any questions!

*We don’t usually add sleeves to our designs for many reasons but Adam’s a strange little guy so he gets the uncomfortable cat sleeves

Catified Adam Murray Concepts

This was SUCH a blast to work on!! Originally made for me and seasonals AU ( and soon to be illustrated web-novel!): Bonds Against Adversity!! (Which is a crossover AU- but you will NOT need to know ANY of the fandoms (let alone all) in order to understand it!) Please please PLEASE feel free to ask ANY questions on my thought process! I put SO much thought/intention/detail/symbolism in this design! And it was SOOO fun!! Keep in mind this is still a concept! So things are bound to change!!

(Also there MAYY be some mistakes with my spelling and what not I SUCK at checking that stuff when writing by hand And generally I just am not a very good handwriter But I DO hope the notes are legible!)

Catified Jonah Ref Sheet

‼️may not be his final design‼️

Just wanted to test out a layout idea for color palette/pattern design ref sheets Especially for a project me and @seasonalmoss have (Estrangement of Conduct an AU) So take this catified fella Picked him out of the rest of the cast from TMC primarily because everyone else is kinda in the middle stages of redesigns

Some of the accessories are definitely specific to an AU (the moth wings and the holly leaves) which is funnily enough a different AU than the one featured in that project I mentioned earlier

Not too happy with how some stuff came out but it’s whatever

Perhaps I will do the sheet for his character design later on- but that’s gonna be a lot more of a hassle than this

Why does Jonah have tear drops at the end of his wrists? Also is there a specific reason for the contrast of his asymmetrical face with his more symmetrical body?/gen q

UGH I WISH I HAD A CONCRETE PRIMARY REASONS OUTSIDE OF AESTHETIC PURPOSES

usually with my designs I try to have as much thought put into it as I can- but it’s hard when a character doesn’t have much content like Jonah, since there’s not much to work off of- so most of what I have for his design is the less specific stuff like shapes, color hues, value contrast etc etc

the tear drop was mostly a simplification of a previous iteration of which they were heart shaped- I kind of wish I kept this actually- as he’s a rather friendly seemingly caring guy- but I was already doing enough heart shapes on characters of which it fit way more- and I didn’t want to have to much of that going on as it lessens the impact. I also wanted Jonah’s design to stay more on the simple end as I try to keep my designs at least somewhat animatable especially for more minor characters like Jonah!

I added them primarily for some intrigue/interest in an area I knew wouldn’t be covered to much by his sweater- and it draws some attention closer to his face and paws. He’s definitely not SUPER paw expressive but I can imagine a little more so than the average person. Which of course helps with the odd negative space that I felt would’ve been left without it- at the very least to me it makes the design feel more grounded and properly “weighted”. I suppose if you want more concrete symbolism- as I see a tear drop shape is rather directional and with it pointed downwards- I guess you can say it represents how down to earth and perhaps cautious Jonah appeared to be

as for the asymmetry on his face? Not much reasoning I just wanted to put some interest on his face- bring some more attention onto it ya know?

Outside of that? It was primarily to resemble a marking Ruth had actually! as Jonah’s usually her adoptive son in our AUs and I adore little things hinting at familial connections!!
