I just want someone who looks at me the way Lenny Bruce looks at Midge

Maybe the most satisfying thing about Midge’s life is that she experienced different types of love from which it is difficult to choose the one. She loved Joel immaturely and later had to learn from it. She loved Susie truly and platonically. She also loved Lenny and that was her doomed love. I think all of these loves were great and life-defining. Also, they were beautifully encapsulated in the last scene.

i know, i know, i don't normally talk about the marvelous mrs. maisel on here but i need to say something about the 'were you ever a blonde?' scene in the last episode, because it was so just frustratingly beautiful. susie's out there absolutely baring her heart to midge, in a way that she never has before, and she's sort of mad at herself about it (which is honestly relatable, i too have been pissed that i had the audacity to fall for a girl.) she's accepted that this is it, this is her love life, she is forever doomed, stuck falling for rich, impossible girls that she will never truly have a chance with. but there is a sweetness to the hell she has chosen, something that makes their love worth any heartache susie goes through. midge is the love of her life, and a sweet hell with her is infinitely better than a empty heaven with anyone else.

and then there's midge, sitting across from her in her perfectly monochromatic outfit, pretending to drink coffee, and it is so glaringly obvious that they're soulmates. the way she listens to susie and compliments her from a place of genuine admiration is so perfect, so lovely, that anyone who sees them together can tell that they love each other. two remarkably different puzzle pieces that somehow fit perfectly. soulmates, in the purest definition of the word. not romantic, not platonic, but filled with the love of a lifetime.

One last rant, because ... you know why (Season 5 finale spoilers)

Here's what they should've done in the finale with Midge and Lenny:

If they absolutely had to have that scene in the beginning with lenny spiraling, they should've at least let Lenny and Midge have a final scene together. I mean, Midge was RIGHT THERE. They gave us this whole scene to set up his demise and didn't even tap upon his death a year later.

With all the phone calls going on after Midge found out she was going to be on the Gordon Ford show, she should've called Lenny to tell him. This would've worked as a callback to the "Sorry I didn't call." / "We don't do that." /"I'm not gonna blow it." / "I'm gonna hold you to that."

He said that and then he didn't hold her to anything. For all we know, they never talk again. So that was shit to say the least.

In the chinese food scene, they could've shown what happened after. Like him putting her in a cab and them saying good bye to each other in a more happy/satisfying way. Maybe even kiss. Or give us a "Maybe someday." / "It's a date." It would've been bittersweet, but a hella more satisfying ending for this doomed couple.

I hate how this season treated Lenny like an after thought, and I get that they wanted to focus on Midge and Susies relationship this season, but why did it have to be at the expense of Lenny? Midge's most important and interesting realtionships where with Susie and Lenny, the TWO people who believed she could make it from the start and never doubted her. I would argue that Lenny was just as important to Midge and the narrative as Susie was. Also, come on! You have Luke Kirby at your dispense. Like, use him? Give him some good fucking shit to do because we all know by now that he's a fucking rockstar with that acting range and Lenny was/is so dear to his heart. He could've saved this whole shit season if they've let him!

And the greatest crime of them all was to not end the series with a Lenny Bruce quote. Preferably something about free speech. My favourite being: “Take away the right to say Fuck, you take away the right to say Fuck the government.” Which I feel would’ve embodied this show very nicely and tie into Midge’s journey as a a comic as well.

I also feel like: Was that it? THIS was the finale? This was what you thought would be worth us sitting through 5 whole seasons? ASP really said "Let's make Midge famous." and took it a bit to seriously. Midge's future is sad and lonely. I don't understand how they thought that this was a good way to wrap up this perfume scented COMEDY story that they've been working on for years? This was a fucking disappointment. And the worst thing is, we know that ASP can do better. We have 4 seasons to prove it. But for some reason she chose not to. And that is just sad.

Season 5 Episode 6 spoilers below:

Gotta love how Joel went behind Midge’s back to solve the problem with the mobsters. He could’ve shown her the book or went back to her to raise his concerns again now that he had tangible proof. But no. It’s Joel, so he has to lie and go behind her back about stuff that pertains to her own life. This man has learned absolutely nothing.

Also hate that he’s trading pictures of her in prison. He specifically asks for the panty pose picture which is so gross. He got mad at someone for having it in S3 but whatever.

I almost rage-quit when Midge said she was still in love with Joel. I still hate her romance plots this season. Gordon is gross. The stalker guy is gross. Joel still sucks. The guy literally blamed Midge for Mei leaving and ending the pregnancy. Yeah Midge was probably still a little jealous since Joel was such a huge part of her life, but there’s a lot of concern for her children driving it as well. “I don’t want them calling you mom.” Is a line that especially has a lot of insecurity behind it.

I guess the rest of the episode was okay. Unsurprisingly, Alex Borstein was great, but I am totally on Midge’s side in regards to her fight with Susie. Susie should’ve told Midge the truth.

I almost cried at the ending.

I miss Lenny. But that’s why we have fanfic.

Also, I know it was a joke, but Midge says she and Susie had sex in Pensacola and refers to their fight as a “break-up”…so…I want to see that story.
