It’s time again for another #WCW post from Komedio! This week we’re featuring the only pro wrestler on the main cast of Netflix’s GLOW: Kia Stevens. Stevens rose to wrestling prominence in Japan then came back stateside having a title run on TNA including some excellent matches against Gail Kim. She also had a brief stint in the WWE where she became one of only 3 female wrestlers to have ever participated in the Royal Rumble (the other two were Beth Phoenix and Chyna). She’s performed under the ring names Amazing Kong, Awesome Kong and Kharma. On Netflix show GLOW Kia plays Tamee a woman saddled with the stereotypical gimmick of the Welfare Queen. In a recent TV guide interview Stevens said she related to that aspect of the character after herself having been given the name Amazing Kong when she began wrestling in Japan. The Article states: "I didn't know how to feel about that. Here's this big opportunity, just like Tamee has, but the price is she's gonna portray a welfare queen. When you think of Kong, you usually think of this big ape running around New York City. And with apes and all of the things black people have gone through with that and being called that by racist antagonists, I struggled with that." Despite initial reservations, she stuck with the gimmick and made it her own. "I decided, and I believe Tamee would identify with what I did, [to] take that name and own it and make it mean something of respect. So when you heard the name Amazing Kong, you respected that name," she added. Stevens has proven herself an amazing in-ring performer and has been an excellent addition to the cast of GLOW. We hope to see more of her in the future!
